I've beeing trying to change the timing chain and sprockets on my 98 3.9 v8. trouble is I can't get the crank pulley off  So far i've been swinging off it with a 2ft breaker bar while my old man has been belting it with a 4lb lump hammer and it just won't budge in either direction :?
Are there any tricks to this and is it a LH thread or a RH thread?
i've got to get it done by monday night as i'm supposed to be going away over the xmas holiday. Pleas help or i'm gonna be in deep trouble with swmbo, and we'll be staying with the inlaws

Park against choks and put it in gear with someone on the brakes and use a five foot tube over a 3/4 drive ratchet then eat a load of pies and hang on the tube :D
-
I guessed that might be the case, i'll go on the hunt for some spare scaffold poles tommorow  oooh and some wheatabix 8)
I still need to know whether it's a left hand or right hand thread? the damn book says nothing more than to remove it

Bolts on engines usually undo in the same direction as the engine runs ie. if the crank turns anti clockwise when running then the bolt will undo anti clockwise it's done like this so as the crank is turning it's tightening against the bolt.

That's brilliant. I had a susptition that it would the the case that the engine should be tightening on to the bolt but when it wouldn't budge I thought i'd better find out before I go and shear the head off
TBH you've just saved me from the wrath of my wife :P and the inlaws

put a socket on wedge the breaker bar against the chassis and flick the starter... never seen it fail
Cheers Steve

I finally managed to get it apart :(bigangry): BTW it's a RH thread despite the engine running clockwise :?
I was trying to get away without taking the sump off, No such luck. I started to take off the front cover, water straight in the sump, eventhough I drained the cooling system first
Anyway the chain is slack enough to give about 3 degrees either way or 6 all in of movment without moving the camshaft, also the nylon teeth are pretty well worn. I think i've done the right thing.
The biggest nuisance of all is the water pump is goosed and I've had to get one from a local supplier cos I need it now. 80 bloody quid it cost  I wish I had the time to wait one from paddocks. Better to find out now instead of halfway down the motorway though 8)
