Title: When the power's out...
Post by: thermidorthelobster on December 29, 2007, 10:03:52
Driving back from Newcastle yesterday I noticed the TD5 wasn't pulling too well on the hills.

I've yet to plug the Nanocom in, but last time I checked the live readings were all looking fine.

It's just clocked 90K miles;  I'm wondering about the hoses?

What's the procedure for flushing the intercooler?  Is it easy?

Anything else worth checking?  The turbo sounds fine but I'm not sure how I tell if it's working as it should be.

just undo the hoses on the intercooler and wash it through, make sure there is nothing in there when you put it back. In theory it should have nothing in it.....

Ah, lovely, thanks.  I had some carb cleaner somewhere I'll try to dig out.  I'm tempted to bung some silicone hoses in (partly because the colour's quite fetching) but IIRC they're quite pricey so I'll leave it until it's necessary...

One technique I saw for intercooler cleaning - get hold of some paraffin, fill the intercooler (after removing it obviously!) and leave to stand. Then drain into a suitable container and rinse. Repeat the process until the water coming out during the rinsing is clean (ish).

Paraffin is a lot cheaper than petrol!
