I though that as we have a nice new forum then it was time to change my Avatar & signature.
What do you think?
Is the avatar going to get on anyone's nerves? ;)

Cheers Smithy, :D
The weather site has been running since March and I've spent more time working on that than I've spent under the Landys!
Oh, and the new banner below auto updates every 10 minutes.

I find it really distracting (and hence annoying) when trying to read the contents of posts when it is visible on the screen.
-
I can turn down the intensity if that would help Simon?
-
Yes, it probably would, thanks. At present it goes from a good pic of your vehicle into one with a white blob in the middle. If you are able to extend the pause between sets of flashes by a little bit then that would probably help too.
-
I've always like Ur's budgie , reckon it would be even better if the truck moves along as well. not sure if u could do that theres a red 90 on here what does.

Very nice Budgie, I like it loads...

There, I did a little rework on it and it's not quite so "in your face", how's that? :D

I could make it move as well if I had a few photos of it in motion, I've used Adobe ImageReady to make this one and it works by altering the same image a little each time to get the motion in the GIF. It's the same a making an animated film really and takes a while to put together. ;)
-
I must have a go at making one of those Gifs - do you start with still images or a piece of film footage?
-
It's just one image and then I added the "lens flare" effect in Photoshop to it for one set of flashes, save the file and did the same again for the other flashes.
I only used 3 images to make that one and then animated it in ImageReady. It's down to how you arrange the images and set their active time that produces the flash.
If you don't have ImageReady there's a free download called Movies13 (http://www.jansfreeware.com/) that will do the same job. ;)

looks even better now

Thanks! I'll have to try to get something suitable to work with when I'm next out. Could it tie two images together (if you took one with lights off and another with them on)?
-
It will do Matt, but you'll have to make sure you use a tripod and don't move the vehicle or the camera. Otherwise you could end up with the whole vehicle moving when you switch the lights on.
I can do one for you if you've got a photo. ;)
-
budgie can u write the order in which u make one on movies13 plz

Yep, have a tripod in the car (keep it in there as I use it for my dashboard cam mounting) so as long as it doesn't rain next time I go somewhere interesting I'll get some photos and have a play.

We'll call the photos:
1 - the original
2 - flash on one side (or headlight)
3 - flash on the other side (or roof lights)
If you want something similar to what I've done then you need them arranged in the following order:
1,2,1,2,1,3,1,3,1
I made the first and last visible for 0.3 seconds and the rest 0.1 seconds.
Instead of the strobe effect that mine produces you could go for a normal headlight flash in which case you use the original image, one with the lights slightly 'ON' and the third image with the lights full 'ON'. If you really want the effect then you could do the same to ground in front of the vehicle like this one:
But you'll need to increase the time that each image is visible for to something like 0.2 or 0.3 seconds. This is quite easy to do in a normal editing program as you can use the brush spray tool to produce the light as I've do in the one above. ;)

Me thinks its dead clever :D

I like it, always wondered how its done!!!
But 10.7 degrees in the hebrides??? Is that thermometer kept in a warm place!!!

Nope, that's about right at the moment and has been for most of the day - see the Met Office (http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/he/stornoway_latest_weather.html) observations for here. ;)
......or you can go to THIS PAGE (http://www.hebrides-photos.com/weather/Weatherindex.php) on my site and click on the "MesoMap" button to bring up the map and see what it's doing over all of Northern Scotland. :D
-
:shock:I don't mind what avatar you have, this new look forum is mashing my brain and hurting my eyes!

Can you get those nifty weather display thingies for anywhere else in the UK or is it just the Hebrides?
-
I've already changed my Av and sig, just until I can find anothe abstract one. You could always keep yours as it is or change with your mood!
-

Which nifty weather display thingies would that be Matt? :-k
If it's the Mesomap, the one on my site is setup for my area. You may well have someone running a similar website near you, try HERE (http://wdworldmap.com/) and click on Europe or HERE (http://www.awekas.at/en/index.php) and go "Weather Maps" then "Northwest Europe" to see your local stations. :D

I meant the one in your signature - rather fancied having similar data for my part of the world.
-
Oh I see.
Mine is produced on my PC by the weather program I use and the data comes from my own weather station, but you can get similar banners from Wunderground (http://www.wunderground.com/). I'm not sure what your closest main town is but you can just type in your nearest at the top of the page and see if they do one for there.
Welshpool (http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=welshpool) is on there and if you scroll down you'll see a section below the weather details that says "Free weather stickers for you home page", go on to there and pick the one you want. ;)
It'll give you something like this:
(http://banners.wunderground.com/weathersticker/bigwx_both_cond/language/www/global/stations/03511.gif) (http://www.wunderground.com/global/stations/03511.html?bannertypeclick=bigwx)
Then just copy the HTML code into your signature area.
-
I've just seen that the code I used last night didn't work so I had a play and you need to use something like this in you sig' to make it work ;) :

Thanks mate - I was worried that it might be something you'd written specially that wouldn't work elsewhere!

Didn't waste any time changing your avatar today did you Matt? :P

Nope! Much better photo than my last one
Not sure of the etiquette of these things - whose job is it to start the thread for today's expedition?
-
Feel free to start one off Matt, I'll chuck my tuppence worth in later on :P

At the risk of being labeled a miserable old sod.
I find the new forum format coupled with the plethora of avatars and other gimmicky images attached to folks posts rather annoying.
In fact the whole forum appears to me to be too active and annoying to read. To the point that I find myself skipping many subjects because it is too much of a chore to read.
It's the sort of thing I would expect to find on some geeky forum, not a sensible motor related site.

One thing that this software can do is let you choose whether to see avatars and signitures.
If you click on "profile" and then "look and layout preferences" youi can customise how things are displayed.
-
I think avatars are silly, and you would'nt catch me using any.

Thanks mate. That is the most helpful piece of information I've had today.
Mind you I have only been up a hour.

If you go to your profile page, then take a look at "layout preferences" as wolfie has said you can disable the avatars and signatures of all the messages you look at... Should make things a bit more readable for you.
-
Thats cool! :afro:
I'll do one of then for myself!
-
Personally I like the Avatars as they help you to identify who's posting, but the sigs tend to annoy me if I'm honest (even though I'm as bad as anyone) still, the reason I have a dodgy sig is because I have to have them on for admin reasons, so I figured if you can't beat them join them :)

Personally I think it would make for a very boring forum if all the avatars and signatures were turned off and you would also find people going elsewhere because of it. The fact that you can now turn them off if you don't want to see them is an advantage on the new setup and that's not something you'll find on many forums at the moment.
I know some things can annoy, hence me asking about mine at the start of this thread and altering the original avatar as it was a little loud. I'm not saying everyone should seek approval for a new avatar but in my case it thought it only fair as I did have reservations about it.
I hate long signatures that take up alot of space on the page (see this thread (http://www.mud-club.com/forum/index.php/topic,50544.0.html)) but again these have been limited, mostly by the members themselves, but also by the new forum so it's not a problem these days.
At the end of the day, if I get too many negative posts about my avatar or signature then I'm happy to remove them and put up something else.
Just think yourself lucky I don't have some of my other Photoshop creations on here as a sig: :D

Fair enough. Each to their own liking and certainly being able to turn some of the things off helps an old codger like me.
Although the forums on the PistonHeads web site don't have such gimmicks the volume of postings there is huge in comparison to many other forums with bells and whistles on or not. So I don't think people would go elsewhere provided the content of posts are both interesting and intelligent.

Having had a look at the Pistonheads forum, I stand by my original comment:

.....and people's posts being squashed to one side to fit a Flash advert half way down the page?? :?
At the end of the day, I've had more emails & PMs from people (on various forums) asking for me to make them banners and avatars than I've seen posts asking for them to be taken down.
But, as they say, you can't please all of the people all of the time.................. ;)
