removed the egr on my 300tdi yesterday, now i've lost power, wont rev over 3000rpm, thought may be dodgy top hose but when checked it just now when rev it out of gear it chucks out black then white smoke and the top hose from intercooler expands? any ideas please??
-
How exactly did you remove the EGR?
Might not even be related but I guess it is :(
-
i fitted a blanking plate and new top hose.... but tried putting the valve back on this eve to check if prob still there. it is, so its now back to standard but lose power at 2250rpm now. :'(
-
Have you checked the turbo hoses? I had one come off once which resulted in a similar loss of power, also check the short 90degree turbo hose, I have known these to split on the bend.
Good luck.

sounds like a lose of fuel or fuel restiction.check the trap in the fuel line just in front of the osr wheel.

To my mind the fact that the top intercooler hose expands when you accelerate then there is a partial blockage in the air system somewhere after the end of the top hose ~ from the air flow meter onwards. It sounds like the turbo is boosting the pressure but it can't all get into the engine so it's causing the hose to expand. Is that possible?
Have you removed the AFM and the hose that goes to the inlet manifold and checked it's clear?

Air flow meter, 300 TDi?
How did you remove the EGR - it has electrical and vacuum connections which can screw with things if not dealt with at the time its removed. Or did you just blank it off and if so, where - at the top hose or at the base of the valve (the best place for a number of reasons). Was everything OK before you removed the EGR?
The reason for me removing my EGR was a flat-spot at 2250 rpm same as yours - thats the point at which the EGR opens, boost drops as a result, flat-spot, simply put. You arent going to get much boost stood still, if any with a worn turbo so any symptoms you get revving it on the drive outside are not going to be the same as when its actually pulling. Best bet is to pull the hoses off as suggested and check for splits/delamination (more likely as splits will result in a clear whistling noise), if its all ok, bang it back together making sure the joints are all correctly sealed and try going for a drive to see what its like.
I can give you some ideas for dealing with the vac and electrical side of things later.........
Good luck with it

Is the white smoke really acrid - it burns nose & eyes?
If so then check your fuel filters, white smoke like that is usually down to injection timing - most commonly caused by fuel starvation.
-
its even worse to day, its all back to original, so guess was just sods law that happened at same time as removing the valve, when gets to 2250 rpm its like all power drops off, wont go at all, under that rpm it drives as normal though?? gonna check hoses and fuel filter 2moro, after that i'm clueless on diesels. it fuels just like run out of fuel but it aint, drop the rpm and its ok.....
-
Silly question time, what's the air filter like?
Check for
collapsed turbo hose
blocked intercooler
I had a similar thing on mine turned out to be the air filter although it didn't look that bad!
-
i'll add hoses to check list.... :?

Air flow meter, 300 TDi?
Oh yes, both of the 300Tdi's I've owned have had them.
-
Not seen one of them before on any 300 TDi I've ever seen, still you never stop learning apparently.............
-
AIR FLOW meter?
-
probably were auto 's. might be worth considering you lift pump . iff you have recently fitted one and it was britpart still check it . .alan.....
-
ok so today, checked all the hoses, changed the fuel filter, changed the fuel lift pump and still no go.... its like the govener kicks in at 2250 as it holds back at same rpm every time... i really lost for ideas now. :?

Mine does exaclty that when is seems to have clogged a fuel filter. I'm going through a record number of them at the moment too
-
Any other symptoms like bad starting or stalling at lights etc?
Just seems odd that it shold start doing this as a result of taking the EGR off  - mind you, it IS a land rover ;)...........
-
think prob just started at same time as taking the egr off as was same when i put it back just to rule it out. car has always started 1st time but now its not, about 4th try before it starts.
-
Sounds like a fuel supply problem then. If you've changed the filter and lift pump you need to look for a blockage or leak somewhere next.
-
is there a filter on pick up pipe in tank? can get to it without dropping tank? no leaks, checked that earlier.
-
There should be a coarse mesh pickup filter, try blowing back through the fuel line, otherwise it's accesible through the boot floor.
-
i had the same problem as you, a new fuel sedementer helped but my main problem was the turbo wastgate actuator arm had snapped (just under the manifold) Not saying it will cure you but worth a look
-
would suspect a blocked fuel line, remove at filter end and blow back with an air line, (take filler cap off first!) try running from a drum of derv by temporarily connecting a feed & return.. if its struggling with starting it could also be a leak along the line (when not running air is getting in, thus lines are empty after its stood overnight)
good luck!

but you still don't say if you've checked the trap infront of the osr wheel.this gunks up and resticts fuel flow especialy if it's never been looked at in 175000 miles.al you need is a 11mm ring spanner.this is simpler to check than trying to check the tank pick-up
-
didnt know there is a trap there?? well i got it running today, the pick up in tank was clogged, but i'll check that trap as well. thanks everybody for the help.....
