My diff lock lever does not seen to locate as positively in my defender as the one on my disco used to theres no indication on the dash either, anyone know of this problem, I am changing chassis in the next few weeks an ideal opportunity to fix it and change clutch and fix brakes and fit poly bush kit and .................

does it not go in at all? or does it go in just the light stays off on the dash?
-
it moves left but does not want to stay there!

If you are putting it in while stationary, it may not engage properly. Try putting it in whilst driving very slowly on tick-over.

doesnt matter, itll apply pressure to the clutch dog then engage when the teeth come into allignment ;)
is it slack both ways ?
does it actualy engage difflock at all ?
if it doesnt and it is slack, itll be more than likely the clip has broken off the pivot pin and you've lost the pivot point of the arm, so its all slack
IIRC its stiffer coming out of difflock than going in

Is this fixeable with g/ box in vehicle

try and ease it in when it in 1st, clutch down, and slowley lift the clutch to biting point. This can help the teeth line up on the cogs.
If not, as dan says it might have come unclipped.
If you remove the 'trim' from the area arround the gearbox, you can see.
To give more room/light, you can remove the middle seat / cubby box and see whats going on.

Fixed!!
It was a simple case of last owner not using diff lock , link assembly siezed at bottom where it links to the transfer box, removed it freed it off with WD40 greased it up back on and now sweet as a nut
cheers, now for the chassis swop, clutch change, brake service, etc etc hope they are as easy!!
