Title: electical problem

friday on the way home from work i flashed my lights and my dash died but came back to life about ten seconds later and this morning i jumped into my disco turned the light on dropped the handbrake and all my lights went out but wen i lifted the hand brake they came back on so i have cleaned the earths in the engine bay and still no change i left the ignition on for about 3mins and tryed to find the fault but no i have last all power and the onlylight i have on the dash is a battery light but she will not fire up and my windows have also lost all power can any one suggest were to look now thanks

Sounds like an earth fault all right, have you checked the body, engine and chassiS are all connected together? I found the earth strap near the battery that goes to both body and chassis in turn had not been soldered and eventually became loose and ineffective.

The handbrake gives it away! You have a dodgey earth.  Currently its using the handbrake as the earth strap . on two occasions i have seen the heat from this virtualy weld the handbrake mechanism. Check and doulble check ALL earth straps

thanks for the help ill look at the earths again but would that cause me to loose all the power too every thing

Yes.

Also, if it's a 200Tedi, check the electrical connections within the engine by (drivers side, running down inner wing edge). These are wrapped in a gauze type material and are known for breaking down..... and causing a simular fault.

thanks for all your help it was an earth problem and i thought it was alot worse my hand brake is ok even though it did get a bit hot
