hi hi!
basically my defender 200tdi is smokey.... and before now it really diddnt bother me but its getting worse.
from cold on startup there is white smoke, this smoke carries on especially when i give it the tinyest bit of throttle, it puffs white smoke as if the timing was out, but i know the timing is in because i only recently did the cambelt and the timing was perfect when it was done. i am not loosing any water and there is no slimy white stuff at the oil filler cap. its puzzling me... please help! it goes back to normal after about 2-3 minutes of it running....
thanks in advance!

i had this on my 200tdi...
Injector was leaking overnight, hence excess fuel in the cylindar.
Got worse over time - it used to run as lumpy as hell for the 1st min before i fixed it.
Might also be worth checking the glow plugs 1st - they are cheaper!!

Is the oil greyish or emulsified on the dipstick?
Could be a dribbly injector as said.
Does it happen again when you stop & re-start after engine has warmed?
How many miles are on the engine?
Cheers

rob, get someone to start it up for you from cold whilst you stand at the back and smell the smoke
does it smell of derv ect ect

Hi Rob, mine is the same with a bit of blue thrown in , but once its hot it virtually clears and is ok then, I think mine is something to do with seals or rings, but hey I will just run until the summer then for a strip down.
I asked porny, he has seen the smoke on mine and IIRC he said white smoke if not head gasket could be turbo seals, he will confirm if he appears.

Cant remember how much it was...
It puffs white smoke only from that cylinder, which is why it puffs :)
You could pull them one by one to see which one is at fault, or get them all out and checked over by someone....
I think they are Bosch ones... Have a look on paddocks etc..
Edit...

Edit Again...
This could be total cock, but could you leave it overnight, pull the glow plugs before its started? Would one of them smell of fuel more than the others? if so, thats the cylinder with the leak!

Can the glow plugs make that happen????
-
glow plugs just help with the staring of the engine cold. mine smokes alot on start up as the vale stem seals are leaking will have to take head of to change them.

to a extent
but my glow plugs aint connected and mine doesnt smoke, just depends on how many times the engine cranks over before firing up
mine starts instantly (1 crank sometimes half) so doesnt smoke as there aint any unburnt derv in the combustion chanmber
id say injector leaking off over night

Just a footnote to convince you to get the injectors done. A mate of mine had an injector leak and left it so long the engine oil became combustable and he had a severe run on (where the oil is drawn in like fuel) which resulted in no3 conrod finding its way out of the block. BE WARNED
