Title: Steering problems

I'm lost. Most of my steering has now been changed but I have a problem.

Somtimes the steering wheel has play in it when the engine is turned off sometimes not

Also when driving more noticable at higher speeds it can wonder. Left or right.

Any ideas?

Also what steering damper would you recomend. What do you think is the best?

Don't think mine is bad but worth changing.

 Have you tried takeing some play out of the steering box, it worked for me.

i have a similar prob, how do you take some play out the steering box? sorry for jumping in here.

To adjust the steering play, you need to adjust the allen key in the centre of the steering box.

Firstly, mark both the allen key and the securing nut (in the same place so that you have a starting reference point).

Holding the allen key firmly, release the securing nut and turn the allen key a quarter of a turn clockwise. Resecure the locking not whilst holding the allen key firmly.

You need to lift the front wheels off the ground to check that the steering isn't binding.

With the engine running, turn the steering from lock to lock, if it won't go full travel both ways, then you need to slacken off the allen key and adjust a fraction anti-clockwise....., it's a trial and error adjustment.

If it does travel fully without binding/locking, then take it for a low speed road test doing full lock three point turns just to make sure that it doesn't lock under weight.

What do you mean by most of the steering has been changed?? I had play at the last MOT turned out to be the column UJ (the one nearest the sterring box) and also play in the drop arm ball joint.. have all these been changed??

I find my steering ha splay in it when it's turned to one side or the other but it's not as bad straight ahead.  You are going to get some play and with a lifted car like mine it's never going to be better than standard but it drives fine.

My old steering box on the other hand had a large amount of slack in the straight ahead position, obvioulsy this could not all be curred by adjustment so it got swopped.  We think the car was a police car and had done starship mileage.
