Title: Emergency, please help, smoke inside car, none starter.. - Diagnosis
Post by: Mark_Solesbury on January 12, 2008, 12:59:08
hiya

been to look at the 90 this morning... Sorry i could not fix it for you on the spot... :(

The glow plug for the cylinder nearest the bulkhead has fallen apart. The middle has come out of the bit that screws into the block... When it was started, the glow plug earth'd out on the block causing a MASSIVE short...

The cable from the plug, though the bulkhead and up to the ignition has melted.. And i mean melted.. There is no plastic on it at all behind the dash, just coper strands.

Question is, what route does this cable take?

On the back of the ignition switch, there is 2 large cables, brown and red. These have both got very hot and are the ones with no plastic on. They are inside a mini loom that runs with all the other cables for the ignition switch, (which have also started to melt). This dissaperas behind the dash somewhere.

There must be a fuse, and a relay for the glow plugs somewhere - which are going to need replacing. Any idea where they can be found?

It will be a matter of stripping it all down, and replacing the whole loom, along with any other cables that have been close to hot wires and started to melt.

Is there a wiring diagram online somewhere?

I think its a 2.5 Turbo Diesel - the one before the 200tdi.

there is no fuse or relay for the glow plug circuit in a landy of its age
its a direct feed from the switch straight down

its going to require a full strip down of the dash to sort out

the brown/red ( glowplug wire) is joined around 10 inches into the dash where the warning lamp wire t's into it

the PITA is the thick brown wire on its own as that is the main feed for the ignition, and it has several other wires joining onto it in the dash aswel

fortunately......my bulkhead is completely stripped and the loom is out, so if you need pictures then i can get some up for you

dan
p.s...have fun with the dash  :P

Does that mean that the glow plugs are on all the time then?
