Title: Which 4x4
Post by: blueboar on January 13, 2008, 18:06:50
My partners parents are thinking of getting a 4x4, out of the, Toyota Rav 4, Nissan Trail and the Honda CRV.

What are their pros and cons? and which are the best websites to find reviews??

many thanks

The New x trail is great, much better than the old one. My brother-in-law has a Rav4 and I'm not impressed. Don't know much about the CRV.

"What Car?" do reviews of most vehicles.

My wife had the older model of X-trail and it was a really good car. The RAV is slightly expensive but then you do get good build quality with good reliability. I too don't know much about the CRV but would think it to be a decent car :-.

I have to agree, I just can't see the point in "lifestyle" 4x4.  Whilst they attract plenty of bad publicity for the 4x4 cause they can't justify their existance by being proper 4x4, they are nothing like as good off-road (partly due to the tyres I guess) and many of them are lousy tow-cars too.  So you end up with a big car with all the pitfalls of a 4x4 and little of the benifits.
Oh, and depreciation is bad on them too, which kind of bears out that I'm not the only one who isn't keen on them.

good point RRB - the dep'n would be a nightmare, and also if its a company car the tax is sky high on the 'chelsea tractor' types cos of the high price and co2 outputs.

given the choice for a roadcar I would rather have a decent estate car.

cant beat an impreza estate for rough tracks and snow and all round practicality.

What about the Subaru Forester? Seems to be reliable and popular, bit thirsty though!

not as much fun as the impreza though.

Well, it is the same chassis, and in terms of giving the local Saxo brigade a nasty shock it's probably even better!

I agree that unless you need some 4x4 then all softroaders will cost money in petrol and depreciation and compromise you as opposed to an estate.

Re  the Subaru stuff if often driven by people who NEED a 4x4 but DONT  really want one (vets and country doctors etc) but they are not very economical esp the fast ones.

I do have a strange soft sport for the Dihatsu terrios mind you!
