....so I thought I'd start by replacing the thermostat - sound good?
(300TDi auto)

Is It getting hot??
Is there heat coming through the heater if not it might just be low water of an air lock.
the thermostat only controls the movement of water to the rad ie. it lets the engine heat up then opens when cooling is needed.if the heater is getting hot then it's the sensor you'll need to change.

Sorry, should have given more info. The heater gets hot as normal and the water level is still normal.
That's good :D :D :D

could just be a broken wire or the crimp has dropped off the sender
-
hmm my temp guage don't work neither!!
Its a 200tdi and it only moves when the engine gets too hot, so it happily sits at zero for 364 days a year but when the fan blet snapped whooosh straight up to red line, but nothing in between!!
Without wanting to hijack the thread, where is the sender on a 200tdi?

just below the thermostat...

just below the thermostat...
wheres the stat ?
dum ass
follow the top rad hose around to the ally casting then look down on the left hand side, you'll see a wire going to the sender
