A classic line from a classic film... Risky Business.

How did they get there? I take it washed down stream a bit?

Glad you got the film reference! Washed off the top of the 'Irish Ford' by the force and depth of water. I can also report that both drivers, luckily, escaped- wet but unharmed.

They were lucky then, I take it these people cannot read the depth markers

I had a spin around my beat, the Irish ford was under 5 foot, not to mention the little drop to the  river bed, that would be about 7 foot  and the drain was up a good 10 foot

What is it with these idiots? a lot of the villages round here are surrounded by water, there are a lot of roads closed, There are plenty of longer drier routes to work but the muppets drive through flooded roads passed road closed signs. Then they expect sympathy when they wreck the car.

I genuinely think a lot of people have a mindset of "My car is indestructible".

Wonder what the insurers will make of this? I mean, it's not as if they drove into it without warning. Surely counts as self-inflicted damage?

It annoys me when people are this thoughtless and selfish.  It makes it pointless owning a capable 4x4 when the road are blocked by these donkeys.

Last summer I was waiting to go through a flood, there were a group of lads pushing a supermini out of the water.  As soon as they were clear someone else drove theirs in and got stuck.  Mindless.

At which point the entrepreneurial types start offering a recovery service. Last july was quite profetable, we even ended up doing B&B.
More awkward though are the ones that push there car to the edge of the water, blocking off one lane and then abandon it.

Need to be a bit careful about that - if something goes wrong while towing them out and they've agreed to pay your insurance might respond by saying "commercial use, not covered". I'd like to think that saying they decided to give you the money as a gift would keep you out of this problem but somehow I doubt it!

Yes some people may need to watch that, however the tractor is on business insurance and incidentally all the cars at home are insured for business use. We were towing them through for free, but if they decline and don't make it then someone has to go wading around trying to find a towing point. If I we were doing it in 4x4s then obviously the good Samaritan image is more important, though farmers have a reputation to uphold.

Ah, fair enough - I agree on the PR part, I would always make a point of offering to help.

That reminds me, I must figure out where my axle breathers are and extend them...

Buy one of these:

http://www.ebrookes.co.uk/p/110347/Vehicle-Life-Hammer.html

SWMBO got me one for xmas after pointing out that, if i ended up in a river "because of my driving..." then the electric windows will not work... the sunroofs wont open far enough, and water pressure means opening a door is very difficult... seatbelts also tend to lock if you land greasy bit up...

Halfords (or "ripoff" as they seem to be known nowadays..) sell them with a nice little bracket for around a tenner.. its a no brainer really....

also a good rescue tool...

.....and the amount of car radios you can get is unbelieveable! :police:  [-X

When they do this to me in the LSE I tap the little button on the dashboar that makes it get 2 1/2" taller.  Somehow that seems to help them concentrate on the large block of steel bolted to the back end ;)

as the road disapeared under a great lake of water and we new that either side of the road there was a 2 ft drop we turned around and tried from the other side where the water was like white water rapids across the road  we thought it best to go to the dry warmths of the grans house

I think it comes down to a basic lack of knowledge about how an engine works! They think that they are sealed units, and have no idea that they need to breathe!
