Title: Carry or drag?

Should i buy a trailer, build one or customise a roofrack off a Kangoo van?

Buy a trailer.
Expensive to start, bit of a compromise. Well built, legal and will tow nicely.
Build a trailer.
Not that much cheaper all up, specific design for my needs, time consuming and possibly a pain to get perfect.
Both can be removed when not needed but need to be stored and still have tow bar to cat as a ground anchor.

Roofrack.
Will need to be modified and will have to stay on all the time= more fuel.
 
What to do?

buy a small, knackered caravan.

The running gear can usually be coaxed back into life and then all it needs is the top ripping off (fun!) and a timber body on it.

Cheap and easy.

Only problem is it'll not carry a huge ammount of weight (more than a roofrack though)

I would do what V8 suggests but take it one step further by cutting the chassis about therefore making it shorter, then add strategic angle iron to make it stronger. The suspension will be meaty enough for what you need. Good luck :)

it depends what your planning on carrying really? anything bulky or heavy will be far easier to chuck onto a trailer. IMO a substantial roofrack puts more weight where you least want it...

plenty of old trailers knocking about on the bay/local papers...

Also check your lisence, a lot of people arent actually allowed a trailer on newer ones.. (me included :evil:)

I'm old enough to have a proper licence.

What i was thinking was bolting a pair of stub axles onto an open top steel water tank with one end open as tail with a angle iron a frame for the coupler. Bit like a small sankey.
 
Will be as much for mucky stuff as much as for heavy loads. Either way i can't tow more than 2400kg legaly regardless.

Also you need to add wil get attatcked by low branches on green lanes and restrict accesses into car parks like multi storey ones.  ;)

Just buy a Sankey, they can be had for £100 these days.
