Title: Do TDi Autos have more power than manuals??
Post by: auf_wiedersehen_pet on January 28, 2008, 21:22:54
Do TDi Autos have more power than manuals or am I just gullible?

See this auction on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=290201503863&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=019). After the 21st picture is says that.............

OF COURSE, BEING A `96 MODEL, SHE HAS THE UPRATED

120 BHP MOTOR, WHICH WAS FITTED TO THE

AUTOMATICS  ONLY. THE TORQUE OUTPUT WAS RAISED

TOO, MAKING THESE LATER AUTOS A LOVELY MACHINE

TO OWN AND DRIVE.

Is that true?

later autos had e.d.c, dont know about anything else.  ones ive drove have always seemed lower on power compared to the manual but always put it down to the box....

As I understand it the later electronic auto TDIs had more power. However, I suspect this was a case of tweaking what was already there rather than adding new parts. Certainly you can do wonders for any TDI with a good service followed by a few tweaks.

Also bear in mind that the auto box most likely saps all the extra power anyway!

autos do have slightly more power than manuals to take into account the power consumption of the auto box

The auto box can also handle more power, but whether the engines came ex-works any different I find a little suspicious.

That one does have something extra under the bonnet compared to mine. In the very bottom photo looking from drivers side accross engine, right by the wing looks to be an extra cable or something and then a piece of horizontal metal. Any ideas what they are for? Should mine have them as mine is a higher spec disco to that one.  :-k

from memory the TDi autos gave 116bhp and the manuals 111bhp - this was mainly to overcome the loses from the auto box. later TDi engines had an ECU fitted, most probably for emissions reasons - ECU is in the passenger footwell?

If you do - that's the cruise control thingy.

Dunno!

I suppose you can "spec up" all cars when new. He/she opted for cruise and your model doesn't have it as standard.

Later vs earlier models??

It was optional I reckon.

Any chance of some pictures of the cruise control system? the bits under the bonnet particulary.  I want to fit it to a TDi auto but I can't find anything in a manual about it.

Hoping it's not someone's home made setup :?

Of course my friend - can't do it until the weekend though (damn dark down here). Work pressure means I only see daylight at the weekends.

Title: Re: Do TDi Autos have more power than manuals??

yeah they do but it isnt there. mine has a kick down and placed closer to the engine.

The kickdown cable is on the top of the fuel pump, on the other side of the throttle lever to the cable (there's an extra brakcet bolted to both the pump body and throttle lever) but as best i can tell it doesn't kick down with the same enthusiasm as a V8.

the kick down makes alot of noise but not much shifting! unlike the V8 auto boxes,

A mate has a 6.2 V8 diesel in his GMC day van, the column box has a double kick down feature meaning fast and bloody fast!!!

Id love to pt the engine in my disco! :police:

I was talking with RRR wgho has the TDi auto about double kickdown.  My V8 will swap down a couple of cogs, even on the motorway if the fancy takes it, the second change being forced by the true kickdown, the last half inch of throttle pedal.  Although it's the saem 'box you don't notice it on the TDi, I reckon bvecause it's valved differently.  There's no advantage in dropping 2 dears on the TDi and it'll probably damage the engine, plus TDis have more grunt anyway.

I tend to find the double kickdown only comes in on the LSe when it's either accelerasting to takeoff speed, or towing.  Either way it's power vs torque, each playing it's best hand.

Doesn't work - I really need to replace all of the hoses. Thanks for the tip though.

best thing to get the pipes on is a cup or tub of hot / boiling water dip the end of the pipe in  the water and then push it on  the T-Piece

That's m agic mate, thanks very much.  Any chance you could show me how the other end of the cable is connected to the fuel pump please, I reckon I can build one of them from the bits on a V8 (given enough time).
