Title: Can anybody speak Slovenian/Slovene?
Post by: xmob on January 30, 2008, 11:56:31: I'm doing a presentation in Slovenia next month, and I'd love to know what these guys are saying about me:

One good thing is that asda have started to stock food from eastern europe and so of it's bloody lovely.

My Wife is Czech and has had a look whilst its not the same language its very simular. I cannot say what it says word to word but in a nut shell its a formal notice of introduction. They seem quiet excited about your visit. :lol:

Well they're certainly looking after me. All I've had to pay for is my flights, 1p out and 22p return (which became over Â£100 once taxes etc were added), luxury hotel accomodation, skiing, food, drink etc is all being paid for. :D

It was the "londonskega" bit I was concerned about, because I'm not from London. Oh well, at they're not saying that I'm a plonker or anything like that.

Try to get to Kranjska Gora if you get the chance, or the bohinj valley (Both near the north border). Both lovely areas in the snow! and of course Lake Bled (Pic was the view from our hotel)....

Even a visit to the castle in Ljubljana is a nice hour or so... Spent a week out there a few years back (before they joined the EU and the â‚¬) and loved it, really nice people and such a different way of life to here. And only ~1h drive from the dalmation coast to the Julian Alps... :cool:

"Doberdan" (sp?) is about the only word I can remember, and I think it was hello, but it may have been thank you (about the only two words we mastered while there)

Look out for "Gorenjska" chocolate while your out there ;) It's lovely! (IMHO) (And if you bring any back, I bagsy first dibs)

Post by: xmob on January 31, 2008, 10:45:40: I fly out to Maribor on Tuesday 12¹² and return on Saturday 16^th. I don't think I'm going to get much time to do anything on this trip. Hopefully, if all goes well during the conference, I'll be spending a lot more time out there. I did consider driving, but I will save that for another trip.

Being a chocolate lover, I'll be keeping an eye out for "Gorenjska" and I'll bring some back. That's if I don't eat it. When I was last in Chicago, a friend asked me to bring some Twinkies back. The mafia at the airport wouldn't let me take "foodstuffs" on the plane, so instead of chucking them in the bin, I ate them. :D

Dobre Den is the Slavonic word for Good Day, Good being Dobre... Day being den. It works as a formal Hallo. The only language in that area is doesnâ€™t work with is Hungarian. You'll find most Slavonic countries like, Poland, Czech, Slovakia, Slovenia all have a very similar dialect.

have fun, and watch out for the local Brew :grin: Parlinka in Hungary is lovely but about 80% proof... enough to send you blind! :cool:
