Just had a phone call on the house phone asking to speak the my father (it's his house) The number that called was 07717484118. I said he wasn't available at which point there was a pause then the chap on the other end send "Is there a good time to call when he would be back, it's his bank?" Now at this point I laughed and said, "Yes, March!" because he goes away for the winter. The guy said ok and hung up. It was only as I was telling O/H what had been said that we thought there was something phishy. Normally when my dad's bank or our bank calls they tell us it is "insert name of bank here" but this guy just said "It's his bank" that and the fact it was I presume a mobile phone number that called us makes me think this was some sort of scam. Opinions please........ should I do anything, inform anyone do you think? Cheers

With hold your number and call it back , see who answears then if its dodgy report it
-
Scam
Mine always announces itself, but then again, I know the staffs names (only about 5 in my branch)
Might be worth ringing his bank up & filling them in?

Hmmm, that sounds a bit dodgy to me and has made me think about a call I got the other day...
I was at work so wasn't really interested in talking to the guy, but I got a phone call from a Mobile number and the fella didn't use my name, just came straight out and said he wanted to talk about my Three mobile contract...
Once I had assured him that in fact the number he had called me on was a Three PAYG number and my Three contract had actually been cancelled by myself about 18 months - 2 years ago, he said that he would update his 'system' and wouldn't bother me again...
Like I said, it didnt register at the time that it might be a scam, but looking back.... :-k

Well have just phoned dad's bank but obviously they can't tell me anything which I understand. The lady did tell me though that they don't use mobile phone numbers to call and she was also very helpful giving me a number dad can call from abroad and they would have any details of genuine calls made to him. I will call him this evening with this information and take it from there I think, if necessary call the police in the morning.

Sounds dubious in the extreme to me. Mind you, I never cease to be amazed by banks that call out of the blue and expect you to give them your details. How are you to know they're the real thing and not some scammer who's managed to get an 0800 number?
I usually ask for a real number so I can call them back. Or ask for it in writing. Both do a great job of getting rid of annoying telemarketers!

Thats the last thing I'd do, anyone can set up a billing service and charge what the hell they want for a phone call. People used to knock on doors and say can I use your phone to call my mate because ive broken down, heres a quid for the cost to a mobile......bill comes in...phone call cost £50.

My bank never phones me, they just send round a couple of heavies!

07717 is a vodafone number so you could talk to them, I think it's a contract number so they may be able to check it.
I got fed up of all these call centers calling at inconvenient times; as soon as they say it's <insert any big company> I reply with "Prove it".
It's good fun actually; It generally just stops them dead. I then point out that if I call them I have to repeat all kinds of information to every person I speak to in order to prove who I am so I am simply asking the same thing.
If you have time when they call it's really good; what was my bank balance on 25 June 1984, what payment to who resulted in that balance? You can ask all kinds of silly questions to just make them work.

Thanks Davey, I couldn't find who the number was with!

Call centres use mobile's now. Not in a way you'd expect. Our tech support dept has a large bit of kit with 20 sims in it that detects you are calling a mobile and uses one of the 20 to raise the call. We know of other call centres which use banks of these to make *ALL* their outgoing calls.
It was a call centre - 99% certain. He'll ahve forgotton to untick/tick something related to a servicehis bank provides/recommends. Most likely ;-) I get them quite a lot despite being on the TPS register :(

Thanks for that Thrasher, feel a bit better about it now :)

Yeah i had the same thing happen, Had a bloke ring me and say he was from my contract suppler and how he could save me money if i changed talk plan,
I fell for it until he asked me for me home address and bank details, I said " you should have all the information on your system"
The reply i got from the end of the phone was "erm...erm.... our systems down at the moment i need to make a note and check them when its back up" It clicked then and i put the phone down straight away, Even tried to ring me back..!! Muppets

i had an email from "windowslive@yahoo.com"
.....because they needed my user name, date of birth, password to confirm my account was active...
i sent them a picture back of my rear end sporting a drawn on smile :D

Problem is, you'll now get deluged with spam because they know your email address to be active!

As regards to having 'fun' with the telemarketers.. we get a lot of calls asking for the new manager or licencee to which the get well when have you got a new manager down for... standard response from them is 'click'.
i tend not to pass on or accept any calls unless they ask for the person specifically as 99% of the time its crap!
as regards to your bank telephoning worries try the automated system that nationwide seem to have developed! i recently started receiving calls from them dispite them being told i didnt wish to receive calls @ work as anyone can pick the phone up.. all you need to do is insert my DOB and youd prob have access to all my account details!
i think your right to be supisious over calls where they dont ask for the person in question directly or state where there calling from and why they are calling so late/early

i actually enjoy them... the phonecalls are best tho, winding them up is a real treat for me!
tip: try selling them something!

I'll be doing that next time :)

Nobody ever phones me. :'(
so if I get a call and they ask to speak to Mr Steele, I ask them to wait while I get "him" - then chuck the phone into an empty room and leave them hanging on. :P
-
One thing to try is googling the phone no. sometimes it works try your own phone.no see if it's on the web!! it's amazing sometimes where you find it!!
