:? There i was qiute happily reading threads on forum when out of the blue my p.c just shut down completly, dont know why. So i switched everything of un plugged main power supply, even disconected the phone line. Switched everything back on, checked my anti virus program for any problems, no everythings fine no malicious mail or anything. Tested a phew other things there fine. So im now back on the forum with no problems what so ever. The only thing i can think of is my anti virus program detected a bad incomeing virus or something and it shut down my p.c before any dammage was done, i know it can do this but it has never happened before. It must of been a bad one for Zone Alarm Pro to shut me down. Everything seems fine now.Phew!!!. :D

Found out it was due to the processor fan not working.

No its working fine, dont know what happened seems fine now.
But cheers anyway, had me worried there for a minute. :?
Its about time i upgraded it though.
More memory,
A decent grafix card,
A better sound card, etc etc.... Thing is it cost money and ide rather spend it on my Rangie. :D

If you have software which will shut your machine down without your intervention I suggest you get rid of it :shock: What if you are in the middle of a document, or at the end of a big download....

My anti virus software normally lets me know if something is wrong or even windows xp lets me know, but for some reason it didnt this time. Luckily when this happens ( with warning ) the software i have installed automaticaly saves anything i was working on or looking at, at the time so no harm is done. It might be the fact that i was running to many things at once and it confused my p.c. :?

my guess would be a heat problem or a momentary power cut/spike

don't forget that withn Windows Service Pack 2 (for XP) any new updates that require a reboot will prompt you ever now and then (every ten minutes ISTR) if you want to reboot, failure to tell it to sod off will be assumed to be a "yes, lose all my data for me please".
I wouldn't put it past some of the erm... more "pat on the back" seeking viri scanners to have adopted this method of showing how helpfull they are by randomly turning your machine off (I suppose it is more secure when it's off)

In that 'you can't crash your car if you walk' sort of way?
I just can't understand the mentality of peopl who write viruses in the first place, what a waste of their talents and our time. Should be shot!

Sounds to me like its 100% hardware related, if it happens again I would look into it a bit further but as a one off don't worry too much.
Agree 100% with the other posters who looked towards CPU fan, you could check your BIOS settings incase there is an emergency power off setting that has too low a temperature set.

I have on windows machine which I regularly have to rebuild every six months or so.
My Linux laptop never needs rebuilding, nor does my unix box,

In most cases there simply isn't any talent to be wasted. The initial exploit is usually concocted by somebody to prove a point, namely that there is a problem that need addressing.. This then becomes a virus with an active payload by process of some sad little norbert getting his hands on it.
Sadly, it is percieved as "cool" (more probably "kewl") in these circles to do these sorts of things, the more notoriety it gains the more "kewl" the person that did it. This is one of the reasons why Windows get's it in the neck so often (it's not the only reason, having a security model dreamed of in a more niave time doesn't help), there is less notoriety to be gained at the moment from attacking linux (it's also harder since it primarily lives in the domain of the geek and is updated every ten minutes).
For anyone that tells you that Linux is be definition more secure, I'm sorry to say this isn't true. Everyone makes mistakes and whilst they are addressed quickly in the linux comminity this makes little odds when people only update their machine once in a blue moon.
if you know what you're doing you can keep a windows machine running for quite a while with no problems (/me touches everything made of wood in the world)

oh yeah, shoot them by all means, it's not likely to be a waste of anything.
