Well, I know its not exactly mud related but I thought some of you might be interested anyway! I was in blackpool this morning so went up to the ferry to take some pics. Its quite a sight! In the 2nd pic you can see the trucks still on deck and what looks like some kind of rope type ladder all the way down to the sand. I dont fancy climbing that!

In the second pic, there is a rope of some sort off to the right.. Is that some attempt to stop it tipping over then? If it wanted to go, would that really stop it?
Its gone completely out of the news now, so i assumed that it had been floated.
How on earth are they gonna recover it?

Well, I'm not a salvage contractor but I have read a fair bit about it. At a guess, they'll try to make her lighter and sort that list out to begin with (as otherwise she'll just float away leaning like that - not helpful!). What I can't figure out is how you'd make it lighter. You can't crane the lorries off as there just isn't enough water to get a floating crane in. I guess you could just dump them over the side then drag them off the beach but the insurers/H&S might not be too keen!
The internal garage deck will be a real mess. Everything will have slid to the starboard side. Assuming she has a conventional layout with stairwells in the centre of the deck then on one side there'll probably be a 6-10ft drop from the doors onto a pile of lorries, while on the other side you won't be able to get onto the deck due having a pile of lorries on the doors! That will probably have to wait until the ship is righted and towed into harbour.

how do they propose to get the cargo off it?
imagine your prize car or smoething is balancing warily on the riverdance!
you'd be camped out in blackpool keeping a beedy eye on the container!

They do usually lash them down, but to get a list that serious the cargo would have to have shifted. I can't see what else on a RoRo could cause it assuming the watertight doors held (which they did). Certainly I've read reports that some of the lorries on deck have apparently fallen off, and shots from astern showed them all jammed against the starboard rail.
I really have no idea how they will unload this one! I can't see how it could be done until they deal with the list.

presumably it listed as the hurricane force winds and high seas drove it onto the beach and rolled it over then the cargo would have moved? not the other way round surely

They do lash them but the chains are to stop them shifting in heavy seas not to hold the weight of the truck bodily.
The trucks are a small problem for the list; Fuel and ballast (Sea Water) are the only things with the the weight to make a worthwhile difference.
Basically they prepare it and get it ready then when the next spring tides are due get as much weight as possible off and take it out on the high water. - don't forget the pictures are all on low tide; high tide gives a lot more water and spring high lots more still.

Looking at those pictures it seems a lot of the curtainsiders didn't have their loads as well secured as the trailers were to the deck :roll:
Chocolate digestive anyone :oops:
And there's at least one trailer upsite down in the quicksand the ship is sat in.
I'd imagine they'll have a crane out to that soon TBH, it's that far up the beach.
