Title: Pro Comp warrentee- is it a waste of time ?
Post by: wizard on February 13, 2008, 15:51:27
I have 6 Pro Comp ES 9000s shocks on my Disco and a few months ago a rear pair packed up, I phoned Explorer UK (Uk importer) and they replaced them without any hassles at all. just send them back and pay for postage on the new set.

Now the front pair have died so i phoned Explore again only to be told that because i didnt buy them from them,  the warrentee is void.
How can this be as neither set were bought from them in the first place.
I can appreciate that they are a few years old and these things dont last for ever but why replace one set and not another ?

This is the blurb on the advert

Such is our faith in the product that ProComp shocks come with a limited lifetime warranty, they are guaranteed, in normal use, for as long as you own the vehicle!

What is a limited lifetime warranty ?

Often i have recomended Pro Comp to others, firstly because they are a good mid priced shock but mainly because of the life time warrentee.

So now i will be using OME

Not sure but maybe because they where not purchased through them, they wont go to the hastle of replacing them as they made no money on them in the first instance ?

You could have just got lucky with the first set, or got the YTS lad on the phone and he accepted them. ( maybe you got him second time and he rejected then )

I thought that as they all originate in the same place (USA) then the manufacture offers the warranty not the sales outlet.
The set i had replaced have been sent back to the states (so i was told).
I am quite happy to bin the Pro Comps and buy something better, i just though if they replaced one pair why not another.

I had my old es9000's replaced by Explorer for the £10 carriage charge . They had been bought direct from them and I had the original receipt .
I'm shocked to think they wouldn't honour the warranty if you bought them from a retailer. Did you have a receipt or proof of purchase ?
I thought they were fairly trusting as they weren't interested in seeing a pic of the old shocks or the mot fail slip . I could have been lying through my teeth for all they knew !

AFAIK they only honour the warranty on shocks you buy from them, that's why I buy direct.  You probably got lucky with the first ones.

However, IIRC Tim sent his back via Paddocks and got a new one, so where did you buy them?

OME Warranty is outstanding, I have never had them but:

We went to Vic Falls on Honeymoon (Zambia). I did a trip in a jet boat where they used a 110 to get there, the roads were unbelievably bad - comp. safari status.

Chatting to the guy the company had been in business about 10 years and only ever paid for one set of shocks on the 110. They never lasted more than 18 months and OME replaced them every time as they were less than 2 years!

thats a bit harsh!!! OME should give him a trick suspension setup with twin shocks, would save them a fortune in the long run if they could get his shocks to last 2 years.

the pro comp warranty needs to be good as it seems that so many break.  Maybe the sheer volumes of them that come back are now overwhelming so they are rethinking about how generous their warranty is.

Never broken one, I've had one fail due to a leak but it was on the car when we bought it.

I managed to break one - didn't bother trying to claim though.

That looks like fair wear and tear to me

I spoke to the guys at Bearmach yesterday when i picked up a set of Old man emu's and they would honor the warranty if i had the receipt, which i don't.

The bit that bugs me (having seen it happen to a friend last weekend) about procomps is they don't break on your driveway (if they do then what does your driveway look like).

The eyes pulled off both his rear dampers in the middle of wales, giving him little choice but a several hour home with no damping at all. At that moment in time whether or not procomp would replace them was about the last thing on his mind as they wern't likely to deliver a new pair to the back side of beyond withing the next hour.

I e mailed Pro Comp in the USA and they replied that Explorer UK will replace the shocks with or without the sales reciept, this time !
I had a confirmation e mail from Explorer.

Now heres the good bit.
I put on a pair of Old Man Emus and binned the Pro Comps.... so now i have nothing to exchange.ha ha ha

I found the OME's to be a far better shock so now i will replace the four on the back with OME.

They seem to vary quite a bit.
I paid £129 with tax, £55 each before.
I have seen them advertised for £80 each at Devon 4x4 i think or £149 a pair from Frogs island.
Bearmach and Paddocks are about the cheapest.

Well worth it
