Post by: way2deep on February 16, 2008, 21:59:12
bought a 300 disco last night ,drove it home some 50 miles ,tonight went to turn round at bottom of road and the steering box has major failure, the shaft that  the drop arm is attached to is hanging out ..losing all steering control ...could have been lethal last night when doing 70....
does anyone know of this happening else where to anyone ???

took steering box off today and the shaft has snapped in two

must have been a flaw in the manufacture,,,i cannot see how a inch and a quarter solid steel bar could snap half way up the inside of the box like that
will put piccy on soon

theres a lot of torsional stress on the shaft, hence its thickness, and poor maintenance, combined with a hard life can all weaken it.. dry steering for example puts huuuuge amounts of stress on the steering joints... and wears the tyres!

I imagine the previous keeper ignored the leek/play on the premise that it was going for sale soon....

someones life is surely worth a few quid!?

landrover wouldnt be interested if it was a brand new motor (speaking from experiance) let alone an old series 1 disco.

Poor maintenance - I cant see how this failure could be connected to that.

gotta be a flaw in the metal
