Hi all, i need a new battery for my 300 TDI disco. Halfrauds and local supplier quoting £89.95 for standard battery? if that's the price then so be it, but paddocks are doing a red top Optima at the moment, and this would be £116.00 including delivery, so this made me think that thats a bit steep fort a standard battery?
so, any recommendations on a battery supplier please?
Cheers,
Andy

Got one from Part Co in 2006 for £42.

Got mine fitted by main dealer a few weeks ago, £10 more expensive than Halfords standard battery plus I think it's a higher aH rating, but they washed and valeted the car as well.

Hi there,
I have bought a couple of batteries in the past two years for the 300tdi and the v8 and havent paid more than around £40 from the local motor factors. Both were heavy duty and I cannot imagine you would need to pay more than this.
Regards Remmy7.

due to the value of lead, prices of most batteries has increased about 30% in the last few months.

I bought a battery from Halfords last xmas eve eve for £95. I think it must have had the wrong barcode on as the shelf price was £115.
I have a 300tdi but I bought the td5 battery which is bigger and hoped it would be better. It only JUST fits in the space. It does touch the air bag sensor on the side and the air con pipes. But my disco still doesn't start properly.
I also have a 300tdi battery I bought just over a year ago and thought it was bust but now having 2nd thoughts as this battery isn't playing ball in the cold either.
I am in Daventry so if you would like to try this battery out and if it is actually fine, make me an offer on it. It still has a 2 year warranty on it though, but I bought it in Sheffield near RRB. It is a Varta battery.
-
When I needed a new battery for the V8, I was horrified at the price, and they are still going up.
Anyway I used Tayna.co.uk and bought the biggest capacity battery that would fit.
I bought a Numax Commercial Battery, I think it was a 664. It could have been a 644. Check first.
Well it is 110AH and just fits in the standard space. Current price £80 +P&P. :'( (P&P is never going to be cheap on something so heavy)
It arrived the next day and I have had no problems.
Good luck
Ed

Odd, I bought a Varta for the LSE and that's playing silly beggars in the cold too, it's gone back to the shop but their supplier is so sure there's nowt wrong with it they have lent me a battery for a week whilst they test mine.
Hope they stick it in the freezer then try to start a H:C TVR lump with it, like I have to.
Also, as said, the price of batteries has gone mad again this side of Christmas, I reckon scrap men watch the long term forecast

Well, muddyjames has lent me the VARTA that he was having similar probles with to you, to see if it was the battery, or his Disco.
i hope to get a minute to swap them over today, so i will keep you posted as to how it goes.

 ty for the offer but i just bit the bullet and went down halfrauds and bought a hd caclium all singing and dancing one for 96 of my hard earned pennys
 even though when fitted my battery clamp is about a inch to short in height and depth to clamp it down ???
been back to the shop and made sure i bought the right one even took in the clamp with me to measure and it wont fit even the standard battery they say is made to "original equipment spec" odd innit
so now ive gotta make a new clamp some how

fit the clamp in different holes on the tray (the hole fot the bulb replacement gets used alot and there are lots of holes the other side of the battery)

good old cable ties, that's whats holding the one i have in at the moment that i am trying, as i had the same problem.
if your clamp is the same as mine, i think if you bent out and flattened the bits in the middle it would fit OK, as there is no gap for that bit to fit into.

and they say im the cable tie king   one of mine is fitted with a Clamp and the other is secured in with a mini Ratchet strap
-
or you could make up a bracket out of a piece of flat bar and bend it round the battery top and drill hole each end and use original pins

That would work, but my theory only needs a pair of mole grips and a hammer
Ratchet strap a good idea though

just dont use them big ones that secure vehicles to trailers though they abit of a pain to fit and remove and the bonnet doesnt close properly

96p for a battery  no wonder it didn't fit
Perhaps you meant pounds, well the one I bought for the TD5 was only £4 more and they fitted it - you might as well go OE for all the messin' about you've got with clamps etc.

you should have gone and spent 10more of your pennys and got the td5 one. It just fits in the space and turns the engine over much faster. It is what I did last winter.

Cable ties. just join a few together and make a continuous loop out of them. It is fiddly getting your hand in but both my cars have cable ties for a battery clamp and gone through 3 mot's like it so far and not a prob. The landy clamp has a bit of metal that is in the way. could always saw it off?

ive a new 1000amp plant battery in my boot held down with a ratchet strap, it will turn all our over if we had enough cables
