The auto 'box in the Disco is giving me problems. It had an oil change last service (96,000 miles), and has at least two more prior to that. It drives fine, but if you stop, select reverse, reverse a bit, and then back into drive, the box goes into limp-home mode - which is third gear ! - and the M and S lights flash. If you stop the truck and restart, the problem goes away until you next attempt to use reverse.
The problem is more likely to occur on cold mornings, so I thought that maybe my man who did the last service used a different grade of ATF - but it's the stuff he always uses.
I'm guessing that there's a pump somewhere for the box hydraulics - is the pump within the gearbox, is it something that can be tested by a specialist firm, or am I looking at a new/recon box ?
BTW - Nanocom doesn't show any faults, but then I don't think it's got the ability to interogate the autobox ECU :(
Any thoughts ?

This is a bit more advanced than my auto box, but from what I know:
The oil pump is driven from the engine via the torque converter, it has to be running before anything else in the box can be powered up.
The pressure can be tested by an independant specialist and there's probably a connection on the box to do so.
It'll be worth you finding an auto box specialist for advice, even if it's nothing serious.
