Couldn't afford either after forking out on x2 lcd tv's (thankfully ;)) Will wait now til every company is onboard with blu-ray, knowing my luck they'll scrap blu ray and revert to hd dvd :roll:

What about them? They don't come with HD drives - it's a plug in extra (silly idea) which it appears was not taken up.

Betamax was far superior to VHS, but it was the latter that won through. I wonder if the same will apply to HD/Blu-Ray.

wasn't beta a Sony product that they wanted to sell license's for; and VHS produced by Panasonic and they gave the licence away? hence everyone went VHS.
Sony learnt lesson from that probably?
Pity, think ive got HD DVD oh well, never use it anyway only record on HDD.

Betamax was Sony and was the better system. VHS was made by JVC - cheaper but lower quality. However Sony have learned - and they got more blu-rays out there :)

Beta supported higher audi bandwith, steroe and a lot of features that VHS took years to get. However only sony eve made beta plays, a few others tried but it all went into VHS.
What about V2000?
I think HD was doomed anyway :(

We are all doomed.
From a technology point of view it could be worse though.
After all Sony developed the CD, and a couple of years later gave us the CD writer, Now they complain about people breaking copywright.
Will we see the same again.
Please note coping CD's, DVD's etc is illegal. But then so is having 4 passengers and the driver in your car and listening to the radio or CD player.

Only thing about all this HD/blu-ray stuff, is all the films they released were not filmed in a high enough quality. Bit like when the put 70's movies on dvd, on the big screen (i.e projector)O you get to see all the individual pixels.
DVD are just fine, the future will all be software and no discs.

I'v been fighting against getting another TV, had to now the old ones had it, just got a samsung 32" It will be some time before i change the DVD will wait and see how things move on.

But I have to say that TBH it's not worth it, Blue ray I mean.
We bought Harry Potter on Blue ray, and even though I spent more time watching the effects than the film, I couldn't tell the difference.
If you get a decent DVD player with composite ouotput then you have 720 lines or whatever, the baseline standard for HD-TV and that's what I use, so when I wheel out the PS3 and play 1080 lines progressive, little or no difference.
Of course the best picture is supposed to be achievable when all you system shares what's called native resolution, ie the DVD, the player and the TV are all 1080 progressive.
So is this really the end of HD-DVD then, is no-one making the players anymore? ( I heard that Y-BOXs were going to get built-in HD drives soon).
Good news for me though is how cheap DVDs have become, I'd love to buy blue ray as they are only about £18 each, but I wanted Ratatuilli and couldn't find it anywhere on Blue Ray. Found it in Tesco for £8 on DVD though :D
P.S., I heard a rumour that the, shall we say "adult" movie industry had thrown in behind HD-DVD, mainly on the grounds of cost, and they were a large influence on the success of VHS last time around :-'

This is quite true (on both counts) - however the advent of P2P sharing has also had a large affect on the industry - i.e. VHS was easier to copy than Betamax back then - not an issue in the current climate - you can rip *any* format, all you need is time.

Blu-ray is pointless on 32" or smaller screens. It's only on the bigger 1080P sets it really comes into it's own. Sadly my projector can only deal with 780 vertical lines- I bet a 1080P projector would be the dogs danglies!!

Thanks to my insurance I had "help" with the cost of a 46" LCD 1080progressive Samsung TV. It's mint but I still struggle to tell the difference between normal DVD played via RGB"composite" leads and blue ray disks from the PS3 via HD lead (and it's a good lead).
And you're right, the conventionla wisdom seesm to be that anything about 720 lines is wasted in 37" or below, so Blue Ray is pointless given that RGB should give you 720 lines.
