I have had a slow leak from my cooling system for some time now, but in the last couple of days it has become a lot worse, so i guess i am going to have to fix it.
the leak as far as as i can see is coming from (this description should be good) where the bit that the water pump fits into, bolts onto the main engine, the plate type thingy that fits forward and to the right of the main block, if you are looking from the front???
now if you understood that? is this easy enough to remove and replace the gasket, or do i have a more serious issue, the good old haynes manual wasnt a lot of help?
i can try and get some photos on later if it helps, but i have every faith in you guys knowing what i am on about?

Dont u have this ere cd like what ive got then andy? I have the rave cd and workshop manual on disc if its anygood?
plus lol if u fix that youll only break summat else thats the way of the discovery :lol:

I am used to breaking something whilst fixing another thing, that is my way of learning lol.
if it is the timing belt shroud, then i don't think i will be doing it myself.
here is a picture to help, leak has a circle around it.

well looking on the bright side, i guess its as good a time as any to fit a new timing belt too then :undecided:

is that the 'P' gasket?
if so you dont need to remove the timing cover , as far as I remember.
I did mine 3 yrs back only to find that it was the black plastic bung on the top of the thermostat housing weeping :oops:

When i found the leak in the past, and when i took the picture, the water definitely seems not to be coming from any higher? but if it is then that will be a bonus. I will get out and have a good look at the weekend, and try and determine if it is the timing belt shroud, knowing my luck, it will be.

Both h ours leaked here, loosening the water pump bolts sems to be the culprit.

that k seal is great stuff sealed up many a head gasket with it :)

If you bought it from Dukeries then the guy there is a mate of mine, so I use a lot of his stuff. I've done both our 300TDis with that stuff, having had exactly the same as you happen, I've also used the power steering stuff, the water wetter, gearbox and engine oil. Pretty much everything in fact and I still use it.
I'd also recomend the Luca hub oil rather than one-shot grease, but see how you get on with the K-Seal, if it doesn'r work he sells Cargo Seal, the stuff is brillliant but a complete faff to use as it reacts with antifreeze whereas K-Seal is fit and forget :D

i brought the one you linked too. I have looked at the Luca Hub oil, have it in my ebay watching list so i remember its name, only thing that has put me off getting that is i have already used one shot, and think it will be a pain to drain.

Once it's been around for a while the one-shot turns into an oil anyway, well mine did.

The power steering version of the stuff will keep a leaky box going for a few more months in my experience - I did think it had cured the problem but the leak came back and got progressively worse until a new recon steering box was needed.
I must point out that I don't know if that is the exact product used on mine. I asked a local specialist to take a look at it, he put the stuff in and handed me an old coffee jar of red oily goo (more of the same) to top it up with!

I must admit, from experience, when i had my old 90, i would just be delaying the inevitable, and may as well just get a recon box. My existing one is not leaking at the bottom, where the drop arm is, but where the steering wheel connection is? MOT due in a couple of months, so will need to sort before then, and when i was looking on paddocks the other day, the price wasn't as bad as i was expecting?
i seem to be springing leaks all over at the moment, but i take that as standard on a Landy :lol:

cured my leaking pas box by adding a small amount of brake fluid - worked a treat!

i think my box is past it now. i seem to have a lot of play from the steering wheel now, before the wheels move.

that could be a number of things
loose drop arm, play in steering ujs etc...
.....or a kapputt box!

The play is only up to the box from the steering wheel, all connections OK, movement goes into top of box, but nothing out of the bottom.
I think this thread should be re-named to BigA's general problem thread lol :lol:

let me see.... :-k Water leak....... battery....... swivel housings....... steering box....... :-k well other than the old girl seeming a bit twitchy recently, and cant find anything out of the ordinary i think i am covered until i next start her up lol.
now just don't get me started on the wife and kids..... :roll:

When a steering box starts to wear, the main shaft and bearing often go and no amount of fixing the seals can help in the long run, but I have found the PAS stop leak works well on steering racks and PAS pumps ;)
We tried the hydraulic oil version on an old FLT once, it was running our of the thing almost as fast as we could put it in, after 10 minutes with the gunk in it the leak was all but stopped, so it does work ;)
I'd also recomend the Auto box stuff, but put it in before your box is broken.

Received the K seal today, got home and thought i best check water level correctly and ensure no airlock whilst i am at it, following so many top ups recently. Went to remove the filler plug from above the thermostat housing, gave it a little twist to test with screw driver, top of the poxy thing came away :x looks as though water been getting out of there for a while now too, by the deposits around the tiny bit that was still attached....
Now need to find one of them, managed to bodge it for now, lets face it, if any water is leaking around the bold i have just screwed into the remains of the filler plug, the k seal should block it :D

I bought brass replacement ones for mine Andy, one for the radiator and the other for the thermostat housing, they are both the same thread and better than the plastic ones, after they both fell apart.
