Title: hi - low compression from log book.
Post by: muddyjames on February 20, 2008, 19:03:37
How do I know?

I need to buy a new exhaust for my rover 620 and I have found a guy on ebay selling them but I need to know if it is the hi or low compression engine. I did ask the ebay chap but all he said was it should be in the log book.

I am taking log book to mean v5? If it is then all it has on the v5 is rover 620i, 1997cc, petrol, chassis and engine number and colour.

I have always taken my rover to be 113 bhp but that is what I am guessing at as I didn't relaise there was another engine.

It's not really something I'm familiar with 9the Rover) but it's not untypical of a manufacturer to offer 2 outputs of basically the same engine, one might be for sport models or high-series models.

Sometimes the high-spec might be given away on the log-book, or a sticker on the engine.  the hadnbook might give the game away too, but another thought is that between a H/C engine and a L/C one, the plugs would be different, so perhaps you can "reverse engineer" the answer ;)

I finally got an answer from the ebay seller. He said the LC has a single tail pipe and the HC has the twin pipe. Mine used to have the single pipe but they ran out last time I got one fitted and they put the twin one on!

so I have ordered a HC rear and LC front! Hope it all fits.

There was the rover Ti which boy racers seem to do a good job of making look really bad. maybe this is the HC engine? Who knows!

Maybe you can get an original dealer brochure on fleabay (for pench usually unless it's for an RS2000) whcih will have model data in it ;)

Id say that any tell tales like plgs and exhaust are highly likely to be worng on a car that old/miles so the only reliable way will be....

Get an decent workshop manual (like an ide garrage uses) and hope it says something like  "the high compression engine was fitted to all vehicles from vin xxxxx1243 etc or all models of xx etc.

But id reckon that a HC enhaust on a standard engine will be ok anyway as its likley to have a better flow.
