started me disco today left it running went to the shed when returned disco not running turn over funny sound
cambelt gone i think would i be right in thinking as it was only ticking over it may not of
done to much damage im hopinng.i was havin it dune this weekend if only it would
of lasted 1 more day any advice please :(
-
Our disco decided to loose it belt @ new year. and i believe the 200 serise have like a fail safe where it tucks all the bits up to try and limit the damage. we ended up replacing all push rods, belt obviously and i think gaskets. but untill you get in there its very hard to know what damage uve done. good luck tho.

Not quite.
You've probobly bannanarised a few pustrods. Take the head off and look, for the sake of the cost, do the lot and redo tappet clearances.
Worst part of doing mine was the crank bolt. with the right tool that want a problem either.
-
im hoping its not to bad but will replace all pushrods and belt think brothers got pullys to do it with so il start saterday and see what ive got to do good jod it never went on sunday when we went to donington park

do as you say before taking the head off , usually o.k apart from the p/rods and sometimes the rocker arms break. valves hit square on to piston so unlikely any damage. taking the damper pulley bolt out , id wip the rocker shaft off , so no further damage can be done then socket big bar wedge it against the floor or chassis rail and flick the starter a few times, usually does the trick, mind it dont fly off and go through the rad though..alan....

I've had mine let go twice now and both times all the push-rods were spaghetti and the second time I snapped 2 rockers as well with one of them eating a valve stem top-cap during its death - not a massive bill and just a mornings work to put right.........

evil do you do what i do with stuburn crank bolts breaker bar against chassis turn key [-X
-
get a set of 8 pushrods
timing belt kit
loctight
and your laughing
before you order though
remove the rocker cover and remove the rockers, clean and examin very closely for hairline cracks, they may seem fine, but ive found hairline cracks in nearly all the engines that ive got running again after a snapped belt
btw, i take it you definately no its the belt thats gone :-., you got someone to crank it whilst looking through the oil fill to see if the rockers are moving

think brothers got pullys to do it
You don't need pullers...., if that's what your referring to....
Its a days work, if you have all the parts to hand.....
Remover rocker cover and rockers and check for damage. Remove all rocker caps and check for damage. Remove all push rods and check for damage.
Obtain parts, including new belt and tensioner.
For ease, you will have to remove viscous, loosen alternator, water pump, etc, as the 200tdi has a plate that covers everything.....
Remove crankshaft pulley (4 bolts). The hard part is undoing the actual crank bolt...., this has thread lock on it and is torqued to over 300 psi.
I had a special tool for this that evil has now got and I haven't got round to making any more yet, but I can hire out a 5000psi torque wrench that is 5' long...., that'll shift it.....
Trouble is it's heavy and long and postage could be a bitch....., but cheaper than doing in your knuckle's.....

Didnt budge it. Trust me, we tried. Took chris9119's tool, my breaker bar, 4 foot pf scaff on the breaker bar and me swinging on it to get it to let go.
Failed methods included what you said, same with rolling the car and dumping clutch, heat, cool, both....
Seriously though, was a nice easy job once thats out the way. Make a note of what bolts come from where though.

thanks for the advice get down to it saturday any let you know the outcome.if it bad can get hold of
a second hand head if needed
-
personally i wouldn't remove the cylinder head! As has been said remove the rocker shaft and pushrods, chances are some will be bent.Replace the bent pushrods(after checking the rockers) and replace the timing belt/tensioners and then start the engine.
99% of the time that's all you'll need to do [-o<
good luck
Neil....

well started today took rocker cover off and released cam no cracked rockers and took pushrod out only one with slight bend init the one at the back got crank bolt out and pully off loosend all bolt tha needed to come out good start for the morning. when i tryed cranking over no rockers moved so hoping it is belt not snapped crank as somone mention to me today fingers crossed 8-[

snapped crank! wow, somehow I think that may be unlikely
-
hope so he said in all years he been mendins landys he has only ever know it to happen twice
and they were both discos snapped end off hope it aint that
-
Thats an MX5 trick :)
Dont see it though. Possisble the woodruff key could let go but I'd have thought the bolt would be too tight to let the sprocket just spin. Money on the belt :)
-
got it all strip down plus a few knuckle and it was the belt got complete cam belt kit and seals
getting it all put back together next week as swmbo has plans for tomorrow and i cant get out
of them so it will have to wait.is the thread on the crank bolt suppose to be that fine as is has to be tightend
up to 300 what u call it or should i gat new one

Bolted tool up aainst chassis leg, then me and burgerman hung off the scaffold bar on the wrecking bar. Threadlocked al 5 bolts too (I may regret that)
-
I know its bit off track but the bent push rod saga reminded me of a not so professional trick that got me out of the deep and dirty at the roadside. Transit 2.5 DI with busted belt, belt available, no push rods. Take out push rods, roll them on the bench and keep hitting them until they are reasonably straight. That minibus never did get new push rods before a driver down changed fifth to first on motorway slip road and snapped the crank.

them old di trannies take some breaking, and like you done, can be kicked back together and be ok again, they were just the best, 1 and only downside was the noise they made.
