I have a 200tdi defender '91. there is a fair bit of play in the rear diff, but under load quite a load clunk seems to to come from the front of the gearbox area. i'm not sure if this noise is just transferring from the front prop or if i have a gearbox bearing problem?? any ideas. process of elimination otherwise!

The words that make every landy enthusiast shudder.....
MAIN-SHAFT
-
thought someone might say that!!
Will it eventually totally give up?
How involved is the job??

i have a 93 'k' defender gearbox and transfer box here if its any good to you £250 the pair. £125 each if need be. both good.
-
lol i wouldnt worry about it. every landy of a certain age is a bit slack in that area (they do say that land rovers and women have a lot in common )
its not uncommon for it to fail, but untill it does (could be years) just enjoy it.
-
yes it is also part of landrover ownership :D
-
appreciate the advice.
Its not as if theres nothing else that needs doing.
not a lot of point in having smooth clutch take up if its just chucked out a load of smoke on start up!!

Just had this on mine, T-box was very loose and seemed to winding up when coming to a stop, so I got another T-box for £50 when I took the original one off, yes the main shaft was like a razors edge, so had a new one put in £175
No point in buying a second hand gearbox unless you know the mainshaft is good

when mine goes im afraid its getting some treatment with Dr TiG.

£175 doesnt seem too bad for replacing the main shaft. did that include taking out the gear box etc? know what you mean about buying s-hand units.
Seems like i need quite a lot of work doing on my 90. only recently bought it. still at least if i get things done i know there done properly, after all another landy could be the same

Labour charge is on top, I would expect about £200 for a gearbox and T-box
