Title: Temp Gauge.....Overheating???
Post by: R2D2 on February 22, 2008, 20:04:44
Hi all (new to this)

I have a factory built Range Rover Tdi that will not give me a temperature reading I can trust.  I have put two new senders on it and nothing.  I have shorted the sensor and the gauge goes all the way up to red. It has at times given me a reading to normal but only about six times in years of driving.  Before I put a new header tank and cap on it I wouuld lose water regularly, but don't know where from. Some said head gasket but man from challenger4x4 said no. On some occasions (long journeys) after say 30 mins it would go into red and stay there but show no signs of overheating.

Any advice appreciated.  Forgot to say 1993 Classic.

Sounds like a short somewhere - have you traced the sender wiring back? Also make sure it's not near anything hot (the wiring)  :)

Agreed, if it's not overheating when it goes into the red then you have a wiring fault, probably a wire that has chafed through the insulation near the sender.
