Hi All
Has anybody come up will a neat replacement for the rear cross member other than the £126 patent one. only mines on it's way out with the floor and I don't want to spend that much. Also one of the body mounts is close to collapsing so I could do with ideas soon so I can do it before my new bumper goes on .I have never seen the back end without the bumper so I have no idea what to expect when it does come off:D

Hello Lee,
I remade mine out of what was lying around, mainly a bit of box section steel, I also remade the body mounts out of a piece of L angle with some sides welded on and a hole drilled through the top on the drill press.
It can be done cheaply but it does stand out as being a bit heath robinson, however I know it's really strong as I reversed into the telegraph pole at the end of my drive and the box section took the whole impact (no bumber on at the time) and there wasn't a mark on it! 8-[

Hi
I know £125 is a lot of dosh but it will save you a lot of hassle. The rear cross member is fairly straight forward job to replace. I am all for making your own stuff but sometimes its better to buy the bits required.

A length of 100 x 40 x 4mm box section laid with 100mm side Horizontal does the trick really well. for the mounts I cut the top of a length of the box section which gives you a U shape this was cut down to the required length and welded to the bottom of the Box Section. I also welded a plate across the back of the mount for extra rigidity, But this was probably overkill. And if you want real over kill remove the bumper and replace it with another length of box section but this time used 5mm thickness.

The tank guard was easy to make. I bought the rear cross member when i replaced mine, mainly because i didnt want the truck off the road for ages while i fabricated something.
and No i dont want a tank guard !!!!

I like the idea of the box section :D and after looking at the body mounts I'm thinking of turning some round ali bar as spacers and just putting long bolts right through the floor ...
nice and easy to change if I want a body lift later :D

How much does the disco body rear cross member differe to one from a RRC, apart from not having the hinges for a lower tail gate and being about and over 3 times the price for a ready made repair section?

Hello guys,
I've just fitted a new floor and cross member to my RRC.
I paid £50 for it,
just look on ebay.
The others above sound really good though,
as one of the guys say,
you can save money on some things but sometimes in the long run it is better to bite the bullet,
buy a proper one and everything should fit!
cheers,
Ron.

The firm who made the rear crossmembers ceased trading before Xmas, the stocks have dried up, I had to buy one from the main stealer at £220, and he said they didnt have many left on the list.
just in the middle of swapping it today, between snow showers.

I'm going to get the garage doing the repairs to my car after the bump to take the bumper etc off then have a go at replacing the rear cross member with box section :D then get them to put the new bumper and tow hitch on. ;)
(as soon as my back stops going every time I sneeze )
