Hey Guys,
I'm wondering if any of you can help me with the issue of excessive fuel consumption in my SJ410. We've just brought the jeep and weren't expecting to be topping it up this often. I couldn't tell you it's rough miles per gallon at the minute as we're only able to short it on short journeys (mainly because we're worried about running out of fuel!).
We read in the trusty Hayne's manual that it could be a dirty air filter, but would anyone else have other suggestions?
Thanks,
Team: Conquer the Void

umm if it had a dirty filter maybe it was tuned to run lean, but this wouldnt affect fuel..
if its running ritch then yes it could be... have a look at your plugs
you sure you dont have a leak?
-
We believe their maybe a hole int he fuel tank at the join halfway down. We've been running it with less than half a tank in but it is totally possible it's sloshing around whilst on the road. We'll check the spark plugs as they should really be serviced anyways.

does it have freewheeling hubs? also check the tyre pressures .

Hey Kevan,
Thanks for getting back to us. Being new to the whole SJ world could you just explain what freewheeling hubs are and how to tell if we have them. I'm guessing they are self explanatory in that they allow the wheels to move forward without needing the engine to drive them constantly?

yeah thats right, if you have them, youl be able to see a simple twist lock mechanism on your front hubs.

You don't say what you think you might be getting or what you were expecting? Despite having small engins Suzuki 4x4's don't give great fuel economy. I know people with SJ413's who struggle to get 30mpg.

its a carburettor problem the SJ are allways renowned for crappy carburettors get someone to try set it up properly
-
Everyone dives right in at the carbs. Yes they are weak but there are other possibilities.
Check fuel lines, check taht everything is free to move, look for binding brakes etc. The Fuel economy on the Suzukis is, as already mentioned, nothing great.

I can't fill my SJ to the top of the tank, it sloshes out of the breather system..... I try to put 3/4 of a tank at a time....
Anyway, how many miles to how much fuel does it use, I'd expect circa 28MPG anyway
