Title: Rarities On The Road
Post by: Bush Tucker Man on February 27, 2008, 21:04:55
I bought the new issue (April) of 'Practical Classics' today on a whim, as it had a ncie Rover SD1 on the cover

http://www.practicalclassics.co.uk/index.php

In it, it runs down the rarest cars on Britains roads.
Some of them make for alarming reading, especially when you think;
You used to have one
A neighbour had one
I only saw one last month, etc.............

In Reverse Order;
Fiat Strada (78 - 88);  78 left
Renault 16 (65 - 80);  63 left
Vauxhall Viscount (65 - 72);  46 left

Matra-Simca Rancho (77 - 85);  10 left

Alfa-Romeo Alfa 6 (79 - 86);  6 left
Chrysler 2-Litre (70 - 82);  5 left
Lancia Trevi (80 - 84);  5 left
Chrysler Horizon (77 - 79);  4 left
Fiat 133 (74 - 82);  4 left
Mitsubishi Tredia (82 - 90);  4 left
FSO 125P (67 - 91);  3 left
Lada 1300 (74 - 81);  3 left

Datsun 1300 (68 - 73);  1 left
Audi 80S (72 - 78);  1 left
Mazda R100 (68 - 73);  1 left (what??)
Dacia Denem(69 - 83);   1 left! (thankfully - was this the Renault 12 copy??)

NB; Presumably this is examples still registered & on the DVLA data-base, not incomplete vehicles/donors/scrap-yard rescues, etc.................

That's also what they chopped down to build the promotional 'FAB1' for the Thunderbirds films of the 1960s.
It's in the Cars Of The Stars (http://members.aol.com/cotsmm/) museum up in Keswick.

I remember Matchbox? Matra Ranchos from my childhood - always rather liked the look of them, and at that age the lack of 4wd didn't really sink in!

Sorry Deano, but I have no control over what 'PC' has on its home-page

On a similar vein, there's an un-molested Sierra XR4i (the 3-door body, with the bi-plane wing) less than 300yards away, as 'the crow flies'

I tend to see these cars on a semi-regular basis;

I had a rear wheel drive Manta many years ago. Great handling car. The front wheel drive ones never quite made the grade in my books. Still didn't stop me having a front drive SRi 130 Cavalier (old shape) though! Must have got through 3 sets of front tyres for every set of rears on that

I didn't realise XMs were getting rare - we had one years ago (sold it to buy the Disco which is now mine), would have been a great car if Citroen had junked the auto gearbox and put a 2.5 TDI instead of the 2.1. Yes it was complex but apart from first class muppetry on the part of the dealer  it never gave us any hassle.

Citroen eventually saw sense and offered a bigger engine with a manual box. Only snag was they gave it a facelift at the same time which didn't do it any favours. The wonderful ironing board-like spoiler was replaced with what appeared to be a strip of MDF nailed to the trailing edge of the boot lid and the grille was messed about with too. Poor things always looked a bit unbalanced after that. If you're going for oddball styling then you really have to go for it - no toning bits down later on, it just won't work.

What about a Triumph Vittesse. Not the bike sort!!

Most on ebay are the soft top ones. the hard top ones are like rocking horse poop. I would love one of the hard top ones one day. Best thing about these cars is that you can sit on the wheel whilst you work on the engine!!!

Isn't it gorgeous!

How about a Rover SD1 Vitesse??? (especially the twin-Pleunum type?), but I quite liked the metallic green V8S, with gold wheels - now that makes me wonder where Subaru got the gold alloy idea from :-k :-k :-k

Not a fan of the SD1 if it is what I remember it to be. didnt Jeremy Clarkson drive one in the british car challenge?

Heralds arent the same either. I like the 4 headlight look.

I've had 2 SD1's. A scabby Mexico Brown V8.... lovely colour  :->  And a metallic red 2.6 manual with gold alloys. The latter was in amazing condition, but it drunk the juice like it was going out of fashion. Far worse than the V8. Replaced it with a 4.2 Daimler Sovereign  Well, if you are only doing 8-10mpg, it might as well be in style!

That one's a rarity, I know a lad who restored one of those from a rotbox as there are so few left.

The DVLA database only includes cars tha have been taxed in the last X number of years, so cars that have been off the road so long they are not required to declare SORN are not included, you cannot declare SORN on them by internet either, you have to submit paperwork for them so that they can dig the old files out of the cellar or wherever they left them.

This is what he ought to have had, a 'Perana' (http://www.perana.org/default.asp)

A factory built V8 Granada (or Capri), with a 302CI block

'Cherished Classics' (http://www.cherishedclassics.co.uk/) had 2 for sale recently, one went onto E-Bay though, & only reached £4602

Oh, & Another one

Just spotted it in the same copy of 'Practical Classics'

There's only 54 Vauxhall Royales left!!!

On my route to work/school-run, there's a chap with a gorgeous SAAB 96, I'll have to try & collar him one day for a proper look at it.

I was in Wakefield this afternoon & saw 2 rarities, both on Ings Road;
A Fiat Tempra estate, the last one I saw was the one we used to have  (got a photo, will add later)

Weren't all Manta's RWD?
My half-bro had a 73 1.8 auto Manta A and that was.
So was my Sister in law's 83 B-GT/E. 2L injection and 5 speed box. Recaro's, factory bodykit etc, excellent machine.
I wish I'd kept that as it was clean as a whistle up top with factory finish paint.

No bottom left in it whatsoever though!
Shame.

Before the Landy bug bit, I had Ford stamped right through.
Lots of Cortinas and Mk2 Grandad's. In fact if they had carried on making the Mk2 i probably never would have switched to LR's!
Excellent tow car and fast as... well you know.

Did have an SD1 for a while, but like has been said earlier, drank fuel faster that I could put the stuff in.

I had an Opel Manta Berlinetta SR 2.0L with a pancake air filter and a cherry bomb exhaust. Massive roaring noise
It would leave a Manta GTE standing...until you ran out of gears :'( It had a 4 speed gearbox and once up to 80 it sort of let the GTE with it's 5 speed box catch up.

Had a 'tweaked' SD1 which did 30 mpg until you *raced* it. It dropped down to 6 mpg if you kept doing 120+mph in third gear

I had numerous Marinas. The fastest 0-60 vehicle I ever had........ I placed a 1.8tc engine in a 1.3 vehicle and left the original axle off the smaller engine in. 3.5 seconds to 60 if you started off in 4rth gear

My first car was a Talbot Sunbeam. You sure could throw it around.

Weren't all Manta's RWD?

I thought the name was applied to the Cavalier equivalent later. Might be mistaken though.
It was the Ascona/Cavalier mechanicals (& basic body), & rear-wheel drive.
The Manta was available in both bodies, as was the Cavalier, a coupe & a lift-back
(the Cavalier varient being the GLS???)

That's not forgetting, of course, the earlier gorgeous Manta as seen below;

Todays Additions To Discuss;
I had to go into Castleford this morning, & as I drove down Willowbridge Lane (A655, M62/jct 31 to Castleford), there was a Mark 1 Golf GTi parked up.
Due to traffic I couldn't stop, but hoped it would be there on my return

It was (are those BBS alloys?)

Further along on my way into Castleford, I came up behind a van.
There was nothing special about it but the registration seemed reasonably apt........

Looks as though someone has tried to make that tina look like a lotus. I had one back in 74.  Followd by a 1600E with a BDA motor, that could pick its feet up a bit.
Capri. If you want the best, look for the Koln built 3.1 RS, they are really rare now, and all the genuine ones are LHD.

Unfortunately, neither are worth a great deal. The Minor looks like a 1962/3 model. Maybe £300-£400 at best assuming it is not a total rust bucket.
Not quite so sure about the Cortina, not my area of expertise, but again I would suggest it's only in the hundreds. Certainly not thousands anyway!

There are still plenty of Minors around. The Ford is a bit rarer. Personally, I think the Mk1 was a very pretty car.

The 'Tina is a pre-aeroflow model, '61 or 62 at the latest (hence the number, plus the bonnet badge should say 'Consul') the plate alone is worth a bit but if the shell is solid then it's worth a lot.  These cars are worth stealing just for their shells, get it on flea bay, it would be absolutely stupid to scrap them.

I'd have the Tina off you tomorrow for what it's worth as scrap.

Really? There are several in the classic press at the moment. Nice presentable 4dr ones are being advertised between £2000 and £3000. So, I'd be amazed if a barn find got over £1000. 2dr ones seem to be the sought after option. There's one on eBay at the moment with 20 hours to go at £435.

Or is it just the early ones that are more sought after? I appreciate old Fords are your specialist area  :D

Certainly too interesting to scrap though. It would be a real shame.

Admittedly the 2 door is the one worth all the momey, but classic cars have become much more popular in the last few years.  SO much so in fact that a lot of my mates have sold theirs because they have become too expensive to run or worth too much money.

As a case in point, if the 'tina was failry solid and mostly complete then it would cost a couple of hundred to get it back on the road and a bit more to make it a really nice example, it looks straight and things like the grille are still there, obviuoulsy it needs a screen.

It's tax exempt which increases it's value.  If one were to appear in a film like "Harry Potter" or a series like "life on Mars" then prices would shoot back up.

Wheras for scrap it's worth about £100, unless the scrap man has designs on it himself.  It could be cut up and sold in bits for more than that.

As for the Moggy, I saw a barn find recently, a split screen IIRC and that changed hands a couple of times, very quickly escalating in value.  IIRC it chnaged hands for £2k in the end

Well, there's no accounting for some people having more money than sense!!
The high headlight sidevalve (51-53) might go to £1500 or so in need of restoration. A lowlight (48-51) would fetch rather more. However, the OHV split screens (53-56) are close to worthless unless you *really* wanted one (couldn't imagine why.... they are painfully slow and very difficult to get some parts for. You can't even get oil filters any more!) and the Minor 1000's like the one in the pictures are still pretty abundant.

Surprisingly, we have found the tax free break has had little impact on prices of Minors or classic Minis. A really nice example of a 60's 4dr saloon Minor would go privately for around £2500.

Up here, depending on make, the tax free bit has made a lot of difference to cars that are already desireable, like MGBs and VW vans, funny that the people with money to run them are too tight to pay road tax :-k It's also easy to Clone a tax exempt one of these [-X

But I agree, no accounting for taste.

Another surprise for you, the price of old Ford VANS, http://www.seoc.co.uk/priceguide.htm

I've had 2 SD1's. A scabby Mexico Brown V8.... lovely colour  :->  And a metallic red 2.6 manual with gold alloys. The latter was in amazing condition, but it drunk the juice like it was going out of fashion. Far worse than the V8. !

There's a garage not that far away which had (still probably has?) 2 or 3 SD1's at the sideof the forecourt in various stages of repair, & possibly - from memory - a TR7 & Austin Ambassador (although I may be wrong on the last 2)

I'll try & have a trip past there to see if they're still there

TR7 :)  my mate had one of them and it was a nice one, very solid.

He took it for an MOT and the tester looked at it very quizzicaly, looked at him, looked under the car again.  Finally he admitted "well I suppose there had to be a good one somewhere".

I still keep seeing it a classic car shows and steam rallies, it belongs to someone else now though.

The commercials are sought after, like so many other classics. The cars get looked after, but commercials get run into the ground so become rarer.

Great thing to learn in, but of course then you discovered Ford and there was no contest.

As I remember it, the biggest failing with Ford back then was the cold starting. On a cold morning you could almost hear the starters mashing themselves to pieces while the old A and B series BMC engines would just fly into life!

Ho hum, nostalgia's not what it used to be.

We drove to Spain (or rather were driven) in my mates dads Chevette when we were 16. That was a fun journey... not. After raging seas across the Bay of Biscay (36 hour crossing!) he took an unfinished road through the mountains. No barriers, no tarmac, big boulders everywhere...... we left half the exhaust somewhere in northern Spain! There's a saying in the motor industry, "what's the differecne between Opel and Vauxhall?"

"On an Opel the engine goes faster, on a Vauxhall the body goes faster"

There's little difference between them nowadays but long long ago Opel produced nicer cars like the SI Manta.

The best Opels were the Kapitan, Admiral and Diplomat saloons and the GT for a sports car. I don't think that Vauxhall did an equivalent of any of them.
I had a Kapitan in 62 and a Diplomat in 65. Never had an Admiral or a GT, but mates G/F bought him a GT, lucky sod.
Last Opel I owned was a Commodore GSE coupe, that could really pick its feet up, handled quite well too.
One of the few positives of getting old. You can remember when there were some well built cars about, and back in the  60s with BFG fuel costs, you could afford to run them.

Re Vauxhall/Opel.

Open is the euro badge for GM, the Vectra etc in Europe is the opel However I think that they used to sell "hot" vauxhalls as opels in the uK as the vauxhall brand was a bit stuffy, just like Toyota and Lexus today.  One example is the Vauxhall VX220 which despite being good had the brand appeal of M&S trainers, whereas in Imported Opel Speedster was rare and intriguing.

My nomination for rare would be the NSU RO80, they are lovley looking.

Plus;
I went out to pick up a parcel from the Royal Mail sorting office a couple of miles away & saw a very tidy Clio Williams
It looks surprisingly unmodified/un-chavved, or are even they aware that it's something
special??

Digressing slightly, we once had a Clio (mark 1) as a courtesy car, it was okay, but with my seating position (fairly upright), there was b*gger all headroom.

I'm only about 5'8"/5'9" & my hair was being brushed by the headlining

That looks like the one! there was a woman driving it and it was out denholme way.

This was at the garage this morning. It's a LHD French model with the power brakes (a button on the floor!). I always wanted one of these. Amazing machine.

Hmmm, they were very "different" wern't they :-k

They were of a time when Citroen were still way ahead of anyone else in the industry. Not just platform engineers who stick different bumpers and badges on the same vehicle that everyone else uses too. The DS was, and still is, one of the best ride quality vehicles ever built. And it looks space age even now!

  Oh yes, the wonder that was British Leyland. Talking of rarities on the road.....
Allegro
Princess and Ambasador (wedge)
Maxi

Oh how I miss them.... not! All of them had such potential, but the build quality was so horifically poor, they never stood a chance against Japanese imports that, well, just worked as they say in the advert!

A Citroen DS pulled alongside me in my local petrol station only yesterday, what a cracker. Pale blue with a white roof, not seen one for years.
Going back to the start of the thread, I had a Rover Sd1 V8S in "pendelican" a sort of creamy white, horrible car, always going wrong. I also had a Capri 2.8i and 2 Opel mantas, a tangerine orange SR hatchback and a red GTE coupe, lovely cars, all of them.
Tell you what I haven't seen for a long time, a Porsche 912/914 the VW based ones, really like them, different.

Yup. 2 door GT pre-facelift. Fitted with 3 litre V6, burluddy quick, not known for its handling, but that one was ace, with a few tweaks !!

Yea a fantastic car you could just throw it at a bend and it would go around it with the back end hanging out nice. Plus it was fast it had a skip brown motors engine rebuild.

Even fairly recent Citroens seem to have faded from view. The ZX and Xantia for example were once fairly common cars. Now I might see a couple in a week if I'm lucky.

Had a ZX as my first car. 1.9D. It was a bit of an animal as although it didn't have much power it had a lot of torque and no power steering, so it'd fight you all the time in slow corners!

No an XKSS was based on the D-Type they converted a few to a road cars (120 of them I believe).

Try 16   that's right they got as far as finishing 16 of the beauties before the factory burned down along with all the jigs, tooling and finished bodies they had.

Streve McQueen had one when it was new, he sold it after a couple of years and regretted it so much he bought it back for many times it's sale price but he never got it finished.  After his death the car was sold by his estate at auction for $147,000 in 1983 (ish) so lord alone knows what they are worth now.

Some poor sod was running his in a classic car rally and a dizzy bird backed her SUV into it.  I bet the insurance had kittens.

A massively pretty car and possibly one of my 10.

a 1 of I believe was intended for Le-Man 24hour but they change rules so jaguar withdrew the car was used later for a press review when first show the V12 E-Type in 1972 not sure of detail but driver lost control and died as a result. tThe car was rebuild for the Jaguar Museum and later the stylist had it in the studios when styling the XK220.

The average cost of a funeral has soared over the last few years and is now estimated to be around £3,307 for a burial and £1,954 for a cremation according to a Survey of Funeral Costs, commissioned by insurance company, American Life in 2006, based on quotes given by 100 funeral directors across the UK.
