Title: Axles
Post by: Mark_Solesbury on March 01, 2008, 18:26:07
Hiya

the axles on my 90 are starting to look at bit shabby... Only the casing though.

If i pressure wash them clean, whats the best thing to do with them?

Paint them with hammerite?

Once they've rusted a bit then either hammerite (not as good as it used to be, though there are better brands) or waxoil, the black sticky one.

Personally I don't like Hammerite. It's too brittle & chips all to easily.
I've started to use a chassis paint  (http://www.frost.co.uk/item_Detail.asp?productID=8756&frostProductName=Chassis%20Black%20(1%20litre)&catID=24&frostCat=Painting&frostSubCat=&subCatID=) from FROST. It seems to stand up to knocks & bumps far better than Hammerite.
You'll need to remove as much rust & loose paint as possible & give the surface a light sanding down to act as a key for the paint. Apply a coat of primer, then the top coat of chassis black.
I used this chassis black to paint my 8 spoke wheels & it's standing up really well.
