The tranfer box on the discovery is stuck in high range, all the linkage is loose and free, the selector shaft that comes out of the box dosen't seem to be connected to anything. thanks in advance

Well, the good thing is that it's stuck in high...
Looks like one end or other has come adrift. You'll have to check both ends to see what is "loose and free" and tighten up so they work correctly.

so the reason its stuck in high is because the levers are loose? its just that the lever moves in to all gears high low and high low in diffflock but it doesent make any difference to the gearing, difflock works. il try tightening up the lever and reply
cheers

Difflock may well work.., it's a different action on the gearstick, i.e. side to side. The high/low is forwards/backwards and could be undone at the transfer box end.
As said, you will have to check all connections to ensure that the ends are correctly aligned and engaged.
Don't just tighten the ends, that will be a waste of time if something is adrift

all the rods are connected, but it just doesnt seem to be connecting to any thing in the box , where it connects into the box, the rod slides in and out of the underthe box with six bolts on it, there is no resistance and it seems incredibly loose, cheers

Looks like your going to have the unit out and check it properly..., not sure if you can get enough access with it in situ.
Have you double checked that the nut holding the selector to the transfer box hasn't come undone and let the selector fall off its locating point.

will have a re-check at some point this week, weekends only last so long :|, thanks for the advice and will get back to you soon. cheers
