Title: overheating!!!

my 1st thoughts were head gasket but considering i did the head gasket 3 - 4000 miles ago it seems unlikely, but i have noticed it heats up quicker now and when the temp guage reaches 3/4 an the light starts flashing the water in the header tank is still stone cold, my thoughts are now either the water pump(which was replaced 6 weeks ago) or a blockage somewhere :'(, has any1 got any other ideas???  cheers

take out the thermostat might be jambed stopping the rad coming into play..

Water pump.  If you swap something and then have a problem it is the first place to look.  I would not be at all surprised to hear the impeller has fallen off the shaft.

YES I WOULD ALSO SUSPECT THE WATER PUMP, JUST AS A MATTER OF INTEREST, WHERE DID IT COME FROM?

its a bearmach water pump, i dont like being tight when it comes to stuff like that  :lol: iv took the thermostat out an its more fridgelike in the cab, il test the stat tomorrow an probably buy another but that stat is only around 2 months old :shock:

bearmach is usually ok, the stats often seize up get a genuine one, have you taken a hose off and turned it over to check that the pump is good?

Not sure about the 200 but the 300TDi stat is a bit more than an on-off device, it redirects the water as the engine heats up, hence it has a plate on either end (if your 200TDi stat isn't like this then perhaps it is different).

Does it still overheat with no stat in there?

i didnt take a hose off but i can usually see a swelling in the expansion tank when i give it some revs an couldnt when the stat was in there :roll:, i must admit when i took it out i never checked :roll: but the temp guage never budged, il check the stat in 5 mins an jus  [-o< its that   :lol:

right then i changed the stat an then flushed the system an  took it for a test drive an its not overheating anymore, :D cheers for all the help muchly appreciated  :clap:

A swelling in the expansion tank when you rev it does not sound good :(

That indicates to me that the cooant is pressurising, from the combustion or exhaust.

You need a leak down tester ;)

i thought it was just the flow from the water pump, its only as the revs get higher an the pump gets faster??  :? its always done it  :D

header tank will have water movement, and will pressurise a bit, they do do that.

if theres no more overheating, and no sign of oil/water mixing... then i would simply keep an eye on it.. it could be that a failed head gasket has pressurised, and thus weakened the tank.

 had simaler with mine swap the termostat 5 min job but a bastxxd to bleed system bleed mine by  getting it up to temp with the cap off then let it stand over night then repeted the prosegure let cool and check your levels
