ok what is the coolent looking sensor intop of the 300TDI cylinder head?????
its in between the main head bolts under the rubber engine cover....
i thought it was something to do with the EGR system, but ive read some service books and they say that the coolent temperature sensor for the EGR valve is located in the thermostat housing...... ive looked at the housing and its got 2 large temperature sensors in, so im thinking 1 is for the aircon, just like my V8 is, and the other for the EGR......
so this then brings me to the problem of finding out what the sensor in the head is for
all help will be appreciated

According to my workshop manual it's a coolant temperature sensor for the ECM unit associated with EDC. Does your motor have EDC?
The EGR and instrumentation coolant temperature sensor is mounted, as you thought, in the thermostat housing (or somewhere near).

I just checked on Microcat...it says its a temperature sensor......not much help...I can't even find it on Rave

Mine has got the sensor but hasn't got EDC....

Yip, same here - got the sensor, but no EDC - often wondered what that one did............

I thought it was for the EGR system too, though I couldn't find a definite answer so I asked on here.
On an air conn model there are indeed 2 sensors in the thermostat elbow, yellow and green. These are both for the air conn. If there is no air conn there are no sensors. The temp guage sender is the other side of the thermostat and much smaller, having only 1 wire on it AFAIR.
