Clearing out shed today and found a brand new alternator that I forgot I had.
I have a fantasy of having dual alternators on the 300tdi defender to keep the aux battery setup totally independent from the main. I do not have aircon so have spare pulley space for another belt, and possible there is room where the aircon giblets normally mount (haven't looked TBH) to fit bracket for the alternator.
Anyone fitted an aux alternator to their truck and how did you go about mounting it? or is this a silly fantasy and should look at pr0n more.

Use the 4 mounting bolts for the A/C compressor, use the aux drive belt for the same, get a bracket made.
Use a 4-pin relay so that your exsisting ignition switches the relay which replacates the ign switch in your aux system, then its' completely isolated.

Yep don't see the point.

Been thinking about doing this myself. Similar to an MOD FFR. Let us know how you get on saffy :D

Will do. On hold for the moment as the new alternator I found turned out to be one from Series Landrover and the spindle differs so can't fit the ribbed pulley from a Tdi. I want to be using a proper pulley and belt there. Also there appear to be an extra idler pulley on the timing cover for the Aircon setup which I have not got and not sure if I will need if slack can be taken up on the 2nd alternator bracket.

Aren't the aircon belt pulleys narrower than the alternator belts? :-k
-
Yes they are narrower and there is an extra idler, but I'm sure you could find that S/H if you wait a while.
Try the 100 Amp unit from a '93 RRC SE then, that has a narrow ribbed/multi Vee belt too ;)
-
Would it be a problem running the narrower belt in the standard slightly wider alternator pulley? the ribs are the same so the belt will seat, I do not think it would jump due to that?

Is the tension adjustment on the AIRCON pump bracket normally? (I am yet to re-install microcat to look at these parts)

should be fine. usually serpentine style belts have a sprung loaded idler wheel that acts as a tensioner.

Land rover already sell all the brackets do do this mod as the wolf (300tdi) is fitted with two alternaters to produce 24v. Can find out part numbers if you want them.

would be useful. cheers
Edit: got it = ERR5870
here is some good info on another forum with a twin alt setup using that bracket
