Title: New (well ish) Roof Rack
Post by: stuntman on March 22, 2008, 19:42:35
Well I tried to find a full length roof rack and couldn't so I thought I'd make my own.

I chopped a half rack into bits and made new rails and 4 new supports, along with a mount and protector bar for x4 wipacs that I've been wanting to do for a while. I also added a a mount for my cb arial along with 2 rear work lights and a plate for a rear number plate.

I'm also trying to sort somewhere to put a couple of mounts for Hi-lift.

I know it looks a little twisted in the middle on one side but when it's clamped to the roof it sits straight and I've just been jumping up and down on it so I reckon it's strong enough

I'll post some pics with it on tomorrow

Andi

Break down of costs:

£30 odd quid for the half rack,
£55 in total for the wipacs, one set new, other secondhand (cheers andy)
£35 is box section steel
£10 for a new welding reel - which is a garage consumable.
£10 Pair of rear Ring lights - going to be wired into the reversing lights and also as work lights on an on-off-on switch
£0 on paint as it was lying around in the garage
Total - £120

Not bad considering the half rack was used for 3 months with the rear lights on. So total 'upgrade' of the rack cost £90

did mine for £70 last year and think i over loaded it going to bulgaria at xmas as it made stopping quickly quite interesting
but i did have seven of us inside and kids presents and luggage for nine as my daughter has a rover soft top and couldnot carry much
going again soon and taking a kids snooker table,12ft trampoline, tools(bench saw, welder, rotorvator, leaf blower)some seedlings &trees, canoe, big ladder, and luggage So not to much this time
also taking a trailer full of camping gear and going to bring back a trailer tent that we got of a friend in bulgaria.

Haha, wel done bob!

Anywho, I sais I'd stick a pic up of the rack on.

Here's a bad one of before the next is after.

Remember I still have 265/75/16' and a 2" suspension lift to go on, as I know it looks a bit 'busy up top.

Have to say thats a cracking looking piece of kit. Seriously you should consider taking orderss for them. I for one would be interested in buying on off of you.

Haha, true.

I'm planning in trying to fit an awning to one side with a lighting system.

I'm sure I can find places for more lights!

I'm starting my suspension lift today and MT swap over

Well here it is,

2" suspension lift with HD BM Blues and Procomps, extended bumps and Brakes Lines. And added underbody protection.

I may stick this one up for sale, however I don't know what it would be worth. I'm thinking of building another rack with round bar instead of box section.

I'll keep thinking about it!
