Hi all, My Defender 90 1996 300Tdi R380 manual gearbox. Recently had a strange Zzz type whine coming from one of the boxes. It only occurs when on over run and stops when accelerating or the clutch is pressed.
Two days ago the Universal Joint attached to the output shaft from the transfer box went. Whilst my good friend and mechanic was changing it for me I asked him to investigate the noise from the box as well.
He tells me that it sounds like a bearing in the transfer box. Not being a mechanic I'm none the wiser.
I have no doubt in his diagnosis but need to know, is it a common fault and how do we go about rectifying it?
Also, does anyone have an exploded diagram of a transfer box so I can see what were talking about?
Thanks all.

My box whines as well. My answer was fitting a radio.... :D
Could try some other lube? Lucas oil stabiliser is good at shutting up noises. might be worth a go. Otherwise let it whine till something breaks and then change the broken thing! ;)

I thought about going down that route. The job is not as difficult as i thought. Take the prop off then unbolt the transfer box take out the seal, which was knackered, huge great circlip and bingo your in. A bearing is less than £10 and the seal is another tenner. The only downside was getting the bearing out, not an interference fit but still darn tight, needed a puller which i had to buy:doh:. In essence £20 for parts another few pounds for replacement oil may save the cost of a replacement box.
Hoping to get it put back together tomorrow and see how it goes [-o<

I can vouoch for th eLucas oil stabiliser, I put it in a transfer box and it quietened the rumble I was getting, pretty impressive as it turned out the rumble was the front prop :-o

lucas oil stabilizer is the business , dont know if it fixes the problems but shuts it up :-# and helps you forget about it

Thanks guys will give it a go. Changed the bearings in the transfer box, no joy
Think it might be the main box. I'm gonna go the 'drive it till it goes bang option' on this one i think.
