This might sound daft, but have you checked the bulbs? My instrument illumination was dim & it turned out that the bulb glass had started to go black for some reason.
I just put new bulbs in & problem solved.  :)

hey mate i know what you mean my bulbs are pants and i have replaced them and repositioned them, i would reccomend changing to an L.E.D kit they have brighter bulbs, last forever and look much cooler, there is one on ebay for defenders look it up just type in defender led, and you will get it, hope this helps mate. :D

LED ones can be bright but you need to fit ones that are rated better than the old filament bulbs, I find that LEDs are not as good as cracked up to be.

A new set of normal bulbs might do the job, as said they go black when they get old, this is in fact the surface of the filament evaproating.

I just fitted these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180231234163 they are cheaper than buying the kits off Ebay, however you do need to shave the bulb slightly to fit it in the holder.  Be prepared to replace or repair the bulb holders though my 1990 ones were melted or very brittle.

Halfords sale off the shelf replacement LED's which are a direct replacement for the defender all the instrument dial lamps expect for the clock. The WHITE one are what I got and they are much better than the standard bulbs which either where yellow or melted the fittings with up rated wattage.

Not are LED's are born equal, many of the LED's on ebay are pretty crap and very blue rather then bright and *near* white.
