Title: intermittant ABS light
Post by: beast5680 on April 05, 2008, 19:58:27
another problem surfaces
the ABS light on my 300tdi has started to light up but not consistently, had a run out today and the light was on the whole journey to the shop we were visiting but it behaved as normal on the way back ,lighting up at the start then going off as normal
its never done this before is never offroad so would this be an indicator of a sensor fault?
wheel bearings were all checked before the Mot recently so no movement in them

suggestions please?

I can't answer the question but if the worst comes to the worst, these are the cheapest (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DISCOVERY-1-300TDI-ABS-SENSOR-WHEEL-SPEED-SENSOR-FRONT_W0QQitemZ150216434475QQihZ005QQcategoryZ31348QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) I could find. Really poor delivery () - 10 days - but cheapest by far.

I only say it as some ABS systems keep causing no end of problems and expense.

Have you tried gently tapping the top of the sensors with a hammer?
Worked for mine

Mine where being a pain for ages and our workshop manager suggested trying it
They just came out of their seating postion enough to play havoc with the system but you'd never spot it
Like i said, tap them gentle, all 4 of them.

Do the blink test.  If it comes back with several instances of sensor out of range then the sensor in one wheel is moving, or the wheel bearings has at some time come loose and moved the sensor.  Also the stub axle bearings inside the front stub that support the CV can cause problems if badly worn.

If it comes back with an open circuit fault then possibly the wiring is breaking up.  Favourites would be the wiring dwon the the front hub as steering and suspension flex effect it.

It was in the technical section, the plug and realy are ina different place to the RRC but basically you locate he 4 pin diagnostic plug and the ABS light relay, pull the relay then with the ign on but the engine not running you unplug the diagnostic then short out he 2 black, black/purple wires and the ABS light blinks out a code untill you remove the short/jump wire.  Then that code is cleared, reconnect the jump wire for the next most recent fault.
