Title: Bus Lanes
Post by: BigSi on April 07, 2008, 18:12:28
Who is allowed to use a bus lane? Had an argument with a Mercedes vito driver who was using the lane! Looked like a private hire vehicle?  :-k :-k :-k :-k :-k :-k

I think that some of them are different to others, and its all about the sign thats on the road.

Taxi's can use some lanes i think....

certainly in mansfield and nottingham, you can get introuble with the police for using the bus lane when not allowed, it is open to all traffic at certain times of the day

As Mark said it's all down to the road signage. Some bus lanes are permanent bus lanes and can only be used by buses others have time restrictions on for peak times and yet others are for buses and taxis so you really need to see the sign to say what is right.

Isn't the usual definition of a bus as;  Public Service/Staged Carriage???

Therefore 'Private Hire' is just that, hired privately (& not for the general public)

Local Councils decide who can use them and when - so it can be different in each town or city.

Here in Shefield we can use them on motorbikes - not all are signed as such but we have checked with the council and local police and confirmed that we are safe to do so without being stopped and fined.

As Mike said its up to the local authority who can use the lanes.

It is quite funny watching a bus try and overtake a push bike in a bus lane when the traffic is stacked up to the right... you can see the frustration in the bus drivers face

The ones down in Bristol disturb me, particularly on the Downs. They really don't look wide enough for a bus, especially at the speeds these things usually hit. It's a case of "two lanes if both vehicles are old-shape Minis"...

The bus lanes I used this evening are brilliant.
After 7 pm they become open to all traffic but most numptys don't know and are to blind to read the signs.

So I had my very own Disco lane.

i done my coach test last year and passed  and we were told a minbus can use the bus lane no matter what as its classed as a bus also they can use bus stops to drop people off ;) not sure on taxi's but if it was a vito minibus then it might class that way.

Bus stops again are controled by local travel authourities most set the rules the same and you cannot use a bus stop unless the sevice using it is registed with the local travel authority, the councils pay for the upkeep of the stops and that is contrubuted to but the bus companies using it.

ps, I work in a reginal head office for Arriva

i know i'm not ment to but after being told southampton city council won't give the bill permision to police them, i drive up them most the time.  If they sorted out there traffic light timings i wouldn't need to. takes 45mins from one side of the town center to the other on normal lanes and 15 on bus lanes. turn the bus lane into an extra lane, problem solved
