I know some cars are intrinsically tougher than others but in general terms....
if you only have one car how do you find it holds up to use offroad and then the commute?
do you find that inspite of cleaning it out after every day out playing, that when you need to be somewhere smart,eg the mother-in-laws, you are invariably covered in a light layer of dirt?
do you find that because you need it on monday you don't play as hard as your mates with two cars, when out on a weekend?
do you find that it seems to have aged prematurely because of going offroad, over and above other non offroader cars you have owned?
this is prompted by me wondering if I really need twice the road tax and insurance that comes from having two cars.
-
I use mine everyday i do rely on it in all honesty...
However i dont abuse it offroad knowing i need it for work the next day..
If it's well maintained you shouldnt have any problems, just keep on top of the maintaince...If it breaks fix it job done
Work hard play hard as they say..
Cheers Gav

i run a 110 landrover and use it daily for a 60mile round trip to work then i offroad it as much i can as i live on salisbury plain so i always take my short cut home :D  i have had a hybrid v8 and pug car and in the end it did not make sense in my mind to insure two cars and tax them and if one breaks you have to fix it then sods law the other will break  so i went back to driving a landy everyday and it never lets me down.
-
I use mine for both work and play. The dirt is not an issue, as most of it on the inside is horse related, so when SWMBO starts to quack about the mess, I offer her the chance to clean 'her' horse mess out out of it. That tends to stop the argument.
Saying that, I'm just about to start a new posting that is cycling distance from home, so that should cut down on the fuel costs, which will be a big bonus. I might even apply for limited mileage insurance! :D

ive got two disco's but to be honest its pretty rare two have them both running at once :(. blue does get dirty but not too often red is in bits. had to go to a funeral yesterday left blue way down the road, with its "one life live it" in the back window. alan....
-
Mine is also me everyday driver when it comes to offroading you just use your noddle a bit more and don't take mental risk's... :D

to a funeral
"one life live it" in the back window. alan....
;)
did make me giggle

Mine seems to cope with it pretty well. In previous weeks I've been rock crawling one day then buzzing down to Cardiff at 70 the next. I will admit that I am by nature cautious and don't take daft risks with it, but I'm not sure I'd do that even if it was a lifted off road "toy" with 33in wheels rather than a near-standard daily driver.
-
Ive driven to work with broken halfshafts, diffs, cllapsed wheel bearings, no exhaust etc etc.
but i got a written warning for leaving many lumps of mud in the car park, turning the speed bump into a dirt ramp.
I dont seem to ease off when im off road though, especially with the roll cage.
It is quite annoying when i go out with a big black satbelt mark across my white shirt as well.
-
I use mine for work as wifey has the other car, though I car share now, but not for long as the girl I car share with cant get in my truck its to high and she is 8 months pregnant   ( no not me [-X )
So I now need it to be even more reliable, but in the last two years its only been laid up for 3 days when the starter motor went, though quite a few times its limped to my works and home like the walking wounded, as there is no public transport.
So now you mention it Im pretty chuffed with the old girl.. the car that is
-
My Discovery is my everyday drive and being self-employed I can't afford not to have it on the road. With that in mind I am a little more cautious than I might otherwise be when laning (I don't do pay-and-play days), particularly where water is involved. I've not incurred any damage laning ... it's unreliable enough without that :-#
I'm also not one for cleaning the car. It gets a quick jet wash after each laning trip but the inside has only been cleaned out once in the past 9 months [-X
-
I run just the one, and it has never let me down!! Granted it does not go to work as such, cos I don't!! but it does run every day, and gets abused off road ond on green lanes regularly!
I couldn't afford to run 2!
-
Run 2 Jeeps...
One was a daily driver for 18 months...got worried about damage/breakages from off roading so bought the other....
Now the other goes laning at times...
Guess its a Jeep/Landy/other makes thing..... :afro: :afro: :afro:

I used to run Blue as the only family car and it had to do everything but take learners out.
It does ok, you tend to find when you bust it it gets fixed, now that I have more than one and it's not my towcar, well it's over a month out of MOT, need I say more.
The biggest thing is that you can modyfy a bit more without risking the compramise, blue is not so good a towcar because of the height and the big tyres, even if I sort out the gearing the handling and body roll will remain.
The biggest deciding factor though is the dogs, not the mud, for me at least. Plus I really fancied an LSE :D

This is my only transport

This weekend i will be going to play at Devils Pit (aint been for ages) and i know im going to get it covered in the yucky sticky Bedfordshire clay  As long as i dont break it, i will be turning up at the office Monday morning with my motor in the same condition it leaves Devils pit in Sunday! It will get some abuse this weekend ;)
Cheers

I have had only 1 vehicle running since I bought the Tomb-Rover 6½ years (I have an V12 XJS in garden where it's been since I bought Tomb-Rover). I found it has made me think a lot more about what I'm doing when I'm playing rather only doing things that seems sensible and trying technics that are less damaging to the vehicle (environment). I have only one occasion that I have missed work because of off-roading (import as I'm a contractor so no holiday or sick pay) went into a ford that look OK (No depth Marker) turned out to be level bottom of windscreen sent the Electron silly for 24 hours (not TD5 ECU, but aftermarket satalite tracking system and electronic split charge system). Had a 109 and early Range Rover on the road in past at the same time you could guaranty if one broke down the other would break down in sympathy so I gave up and stuck to 1 vehicle and had less trouble. I work at Jaguar Land-Rover in Gaydon so turning up to work in mucky vehicle is not a problem, not married so can't say about Mother-in-law bit at the moment .
-
Only 1 vehicle, for both work and play. The only problem is if it breaks getting the parts has to be by post, so it can take a couple of days before I get to fix it. So I try to keep it in one piece and avoid anything that will cause major problems. But will still make her earn her car tax costs!
Have found the more you pay on toys, the more money she demands in niggling little faults!
-
Use one vehicle for playing and commuting, pay no road tax and naff all insurance. Copes quite well, occasional upsets but it is 35years old. Doesn't really do 'smart' though
Strictly speaking I have two roadworthy vehicles but the 101 doesn't get out much.
-
Mines used for play, work & pleasure. Used to run a second motor but just couldn't justify 2 lots of road tax, insurance n mot, :-k so sold the car. :D Have been running on bio-diesel now for a couple of weeks and now its playing up  Have changed fuel filter today...lets hope its just that. -

Not quite the same but allmost.
I used to have just my Elise (only car) and did a lot of trackdays, huge risk to breaking it and once spent 2 weeks wihtout car dut to a part on order (and it was only a rover part).
Becuase I needed it I often had to spend more on parts and garrage services than a DIY job with mates helping an eventually I could afford a runabout as well. There were practical issues that compounded it e.g. no boot space, but that are similar to your mud on seats, mother in law cant get in type issues.
Having 2 cars can help (even re the money)
Your every day car can be more economical for petrol
If you bust your "toy" you dont have to rush to buy parts and can wait, ebay etc and get mates to help with repairs
You can modify your "toy" more, my Elise is now very very track focussed but wouldnt want to commute in it! (no stereo etc)
You can get a limited miles policy on the toy (Again My elise and Landy cost £390 full comp for both, but only as I have a propper car as well)
You can SORN the toy for a few months, especially if its off the road being modified, however I appreciate 4x4 is an all year round hobby
You could get a tax exempt Toy
Security "may" be less of an issue as you dont have to leave it round town center car parks etc
Less tyre ware on expensive off road tyres (maybe, thats a guess, but use borign normal ones on the runnabout)
If you get half way through a job and needs parts/tools/food you can still nip to the shops!
-
The hilux was my only car, Just bought a cheap Escort diesel for everyday. Due to my injector giving up the ghost
But, as many above, never really had any issues when Monday comes, (Pump went on normal road stuff)
carbore - Any recomendations on a dual car policy. A lot of the insures i`ve tried don`t like my lux.
They say the hilux is a commercial and the escort plg. They dont like mixing the two on a policy
-
Anyone used one of these multicar policies?
-
All my car insurances are being put onto 1 next month, alot cheaper than separate policies and i get to keep the agreed value of the classics. Last quote was for £580 probably gone up but for 2 Defs and 3 classic cars it isnt bad.

My previous reply re insurance has vanished...
I use http://www.hagertyinsurance.co.uk/ (http://www.hagertyinsurance.co.uk/) but they only do classics/sports however classic is anything over either 10-15 years (they were happy to quote for a defender and cover my S3)
They dont seem to care about mods at all and have a motto "until you learn to drive two cars at once, we will allways be cheap for multiplecars" (or something like!)
They do need you to have a policy with another insurere for a "propper" everyday car so are different form admiral Multicar etc. but well worth it if you have a normal car and a few toys. You dont earn no claims however and its limited miles (but still fully comp) they also do guaranteed buy back so if you bin your pride an joy or family hierloom they wont just write it off. Well worth a try in my mind

Typical spoke to soon fortunately I was able to borrow my Dad car after alternator packed up whiles Off Roading with Coventry Warwickshire Mud-Club think although I believe the original electrical problem may have something to do with the failure this weekend.

My Terrano is the only motor we have, but I don't find it a prob as I like the inside to be clean anyway :D I don't push it to hard off road anyway as i'd rarther drive home than on the back of a low loader  Since starting to drive off road I have found that my lovely shiny black paintwork has ended up with a few nice scratches & the last ones where on top of the front O/S wing thanks to a huge amount of mud that you chucked up in the air BigblueMaverick when I was following you in yorkshire the other week

SORRY WE DO NOT INSURE
Hagerty does not offer an insurance product for:
* Inexpensive home-built car kits that do not replicate a classic vehicle
* Drivers with poor driving records
* Any vehicles used for off-road or utility type driving
* Pro-street vehicles modified exclusively with racing features such as roll cages, wheelie casters, nitrous systems, parachutes, etc. (Consideration may be given to show-use only vehicles)
* Regular-use vehicles driven on a daily basis
* Vehicles used primarily for commercial use
* Motorcycles
* Caravans
I take it that means they dont cover you `whilst` your offroading
