Could be a momentous day :D
-
There must be someone local on here, who can photograph the take-off. or landing, & post the pics??
-
Would be good to see it flying....
-
There are several clips on YouTube from it's earlier flight in October last year. But today's flight is for certification, I believe.
-
Have great memories of watching those things at air displays when I was a nipper!

Not saying military resources are stretched, but bringing back a Vulcan is taking the mick!
It's a completed waste of money, the £7,000,000 could have been better spent.

The money to restore the Vulcan Bomber - something that we should be proud of as part of our military heritage - has come from the public. Less than half has come from the Lottery heritage fund.
What would you have spent the money on? I would rather see £2.3 million of Lottery money spent on something British than go to some Muslim group to build a mosque. (Isn't there a sense of irony in the fact that Muslims abhor gambling yet they still like to profit from the lottery).
Over to you

We have to remember that this machine is an icon of times that we are best rid of. But I will still be in awe watching it fly.
-
I have to agree it is money well spent, it is an icon and also part of our heritage. It is good to see efforts coming to fruition with this flight.
On a similar vein - I was in Malta when it was the 60th anniversary of VE day (2005) and was priveleged to be at Grand harbour Valetta to see a Spitfire & Hurricane from Duxford do a flypast and a few aerial stunts. These planes were flown from Duxford to Malta & back by volunteers and fundraising took place all year to pay for the flight.
The atmosphere was electric - I was talking with locals who remembered when it was for real - they literally had tears in their eyes as the planes made there entrance into the harbour.
A day I will never forget :)

I agree about the "times we are best rid of" but it also serves as a reminder of could easily come back and haunt us in our "free" world

I stand to be corrected on this, but isn't the Vulcan to the Sky organisation a charity, with money donated by members of the Public and businesses? From what I recall, the MoD had nothing to do with at all.
The Red Arrows, Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and other Armed Forces Display teams are not solely funded by MoD/Public money, they also seek sponsorship from private funding.
Lottery funding has always been a major hangup of mine. Give the winner a £2 million limit and the rest to worthy causes, like hospitals and the RNLI.
That would avoid the likes of that moron Michael Carrol ending up with and wasting a fortune.
-
Just been on the local news here it didn't gain certification today. They have a recurring problem with the landing gear doors. So its back in for modifications. More than 75% of the funds for the Vulcan have been public donations so I think that answers the question that people think its money well spent.
It may be an icon of times we'd rather forget but surely the same can be said about WW1 & 2 aircraft. I live fairly near to bruntingthorpe if I am about and free when I know its going up I'll go and take some pics
-
We went in a Vulcan a few years ago @ RAF Cosford.
I took the 2 eldest to Cosford just to get out of the house but when we got there it was an open cockpit day.
We queued in the cold and rain but eventually we got to climb inside the very very cramped cockpit. How those guys spent hour after hour in there I haven't got a clue.
A good experience nonetheless.

the vulcan is a stunning aircraft, it carried out the longest bombing mission of all time when it dropped a bomb on port stanley in the falklands war, long may it fly

How about medical care for injured soldiers, food for the homeless or charities that are desperatley underfunded? Instead of some cold war relic.

Never said it did. MoD could afford to waste that much money, there streched to breaking point as it is.
Sorry to rant, but the way this country wastes money is appaling. It then has the audacity to complain about needing to raise even more for the basics it has promised the people that live within its care.

No problem with having a rant. We all do it. As I mentioned earlier, the National Lottery could be divided a lot more fairly. It annoys me that charities have to go cap in hand to the Lottery for funding, but some drugged up ne'er do well can stick the contents of her unwashed bed in an art gallery and get a 'grant' for it!
Perhaps MPs should be made to pay bacxk all their 'expenses' into a worthwhile cause. Somehow I don't see that happening though.

Found this on a photography forum I frequent - I believe it was taken yesterday..............................................................
-
Littlepow, it may be a coldwar relic but it is part of our military history. I feel as you do that more should be done to help our Armed Forces that are injured during combat but that, I fear will take a change in Government to happen.
Charity, where does that begin? When you look at the amount of different charities in this country alone, you couldn't afford to give each of them a pound out of your monthly pay. So, which do you decide to give to? Do furry animals get precedence over children? The mixed up values in this country make me wonder.
In an ideal world we would look after our armed forces but that is not politically correct. We would look after those that cannot look after themselves but again that is not politically correct. The politician way is to listen to the so-called minority and translate that to a majority vote

Quite frankly I'm pretty P***ed of with the whole damned country at the moment. My wife is in a wheelchair because she has Chronic Fatigue, she's still trying to hold down a job and pay her taxes but to make life a little easier we applied for a blue badge so that when I take her out (she's not up to driving) I don't have to stuggle getting the chair out of the car or push it for miles to get where we're going.
Well aparently social services don't regard her as dissabled. The woman behind the counter took great pleasure in telling us that her "freind" had ME and had recovered.
Well Whoppe F***ING DOO for her, in the meantime we have to struggle because the illness that my wife suffers from does not exist in the petty little minds of some knobhead beurocrats who probably couldn't find their backside with a map, let alone understand the complexities of medical health.
So sod the lot of them, when I'm finished paying tax to keep the fat bitch behind her counter with the nice clock on the wall to watch over my shoulder because it was 10 minutes to her going home time I'll spend my money on what I sodding well please and if that is to support a relic of a long ended war then so be it. After all it helped defend my right to choose where I spend my money didn't it?
If my wife were an albanian single mother with no grasp of the english language then she's be set for life in this country, sure I'd like to see us take better care of our veterans, pay our teachers and our nurses more money (anybody who thinks they don't deserve better pay should just try doing the job first) and pay our politicians a damned sight less, but it's not a perfect world and we can't fix it overnight.

Not wishing to be too pedantic but it didn't bomb Port Stanley ... just the airfield outside of the town.
Not sure the islanders would have been too pleased to have been bombed by the people supposedly trying to liberate them

It's also important to remember the times we are best rid of so that we don't inadvertently repeat the same mistakes and end up there again. History has a habit of repeating itself ... with man's assistance, of course :D

I agree.... this country wastes public money like it's going out of fashion. But surely the point is that it isn't 'this country' that funded the project? It was the public either directly with the charity or indirectly by buying lottery tickets.
-
I saw the last flight at some airshow when i was a lad.
I remember it doing a banked flypast with 'GoodBye' painted on the inside of the bomb bay doors.....
Anyone know where that would have been?

It did have, bu the Yanks have taken that one when they bombed Bagdad! Although still an impressive feat.

It's a completed waste of money, the £7,000,000 could have been better spent.
This bomber has been restored with money from private donations, a little hard won lottery cash, and thousands of hours of voluntary work by ex-Vulcan engineers some of whom I used to work with.
More info here: http://www.tvoc.co.uk/
This has very little to with the current military budget.

Never said it did have anything to do with the MoD budget, and have made this even clearer since. But it is a waste of the lottery charity money. But yes, people can spend there well earned money on what they like.

Just feel I need to put my thoughts to this matter. I served in the Army during the cold war and was glad to know we had that marvel of "British" engineering on our side. They may have only flown in anger once, during the Falklands conflict but it must have been a deterant to any enemy's of ours. I also remember them at the airshows and still admire the crews that would have had to spend long hours in that small space. I couldn't have done there job if it came to the final conclusion in the cold war. Yes its a lot of money and I suppose it wont be flying very much but lets enjoy it while we can. :army:
