Changed the clutch on my disco 3.5v8 with LT77 gearbox, on the side of the box there were 2 pipes going to the oil cooler on the front of the car. When I removed these we lost some oil the oil was red in color. Am I right in thinking this is from the gearbox or is it from the transfer box as I need to replace what was lost.

Hi
The gearbox! The Xfer has EP90

Am confused.
There are no oil pipes from an LT77 manual gearbox to the front of the engine. The oil used within an LT77 gearbox is ATF (automatic transmission fluid), the transfer box is EP90. The pipes to the front sound like an oil cooler for an auto box!! There are pipes on a diesel from the engine to the oil cooler which forms part of the radiator......
ps: your not referring to two small diameter pipes that connect at different positions on the gear/trans boxes....!! if you are, these are breathers....
pss: even as I type, I'm still more confused.., got any pictures?

I assumed he was referring to an after market oil cooler for the gearbox? Some people who tow caravans put them on manual boxes to keep them cool.
If he is getting AFT (red oil) out the engine then he is in trouble!

Careful, the clue is there to see, his is a 3.5 V8 and these DO have an oil cooler on the gearbox, the oil is ATF or can be MTF, just not EPanything.
It does not however interact in any way with the water radiator, just the hairy sauage behind the grille.
-
Ahhh I thought it was only automatics that had the hairy sausage. I seem to think the engine oil went through the side of the radiator on mine so yes any gearbox cooling would have to go via the hairy sausage...

My 3.5 V8 Disco did not have and Oil Cooler, unless the EFi V8s had oil Cooler

Thanks guys.
I to was confuded by the pipes running from the gearbox to the "Hairy Sausage" as this was the first clutch I had changed and the haynes manual didin't mention any pipes.
Anyway all is done now and she is back running as sweet as.

Could be I don't know :-k Ours has in and it's an'88 3.5 EFi RRC, the wife's '94 TDi doesn't (though it's an R380). There will be a HP limit at which the gearbox needs external cooling (worth remembering if you tune one up).

Still confused. Have checked everywhere that I can and still can't find an LT77 with additional connection points for an oil cooler connection......
All the LT77's that I've seen, and that's a few, there are only two holes of any size to connect to. Trouble is, these are the drain and fill points.....
As said, still confused.....
Hope to be enlightened.... this is to good to be forgotten

Could be a case of mistaken identity....
What are the recognition points for an LT77 anyway...?

They have the number stamped on them...
There are many different types of LT 77 used in the Landrover range, the first ones were used in about 1983, these were the suffix D (last digit of the serial number)and were the weakest type. The LT 77 was developed through to the suffix H LT 77S and was last used in 1994.

The pipes go into a housing on the passenger's side of the box, near the back (near the pump) so if the box doesn' tneed an oil cooler then the housing will be a blank with no fittings for the cooler pipes.

near the back (near the pump)
What other pump, there's only three pumps, fuel, oil and steering?
-
The gearbox has it's own internal oil pump, as does the Borg Warner transfer box fitted to RRC.

I thought that they were "splash" lubricated

...crunching through second, and occasionally refusing to play with a certain gear.... mine seems to be reverse at the mo, but was 5th last month......
