As some of you may remember a while ago I replaced my steering box on the 300 Tdi .The pump seems ok but the steering is heavy when the vehicle is stationary.I was crawling around today and the damper looks rotten I would say the oil has been weeping away. And I think I saw rust on the ram.Do they seize up which would explain my problems.

I've got on ethat's been stood and the steering is very heavy. That said you are asking a lot to be able to move the steering at all when it's not moving, you'll wear it out doing that.

My 200 you could move the steering whilst staionary no probs. This thing its as though its got no power at slow speeds .I struggle to get out of the cul-de-sac where I live when there are other vehicles are on the street.

PAS probably not working then

This may seem a daft idea but surely to prove your steering damper isn't seized "Take it Off". It wont make any difference standing still. Its free to take off but cost money to replace the wrong bits. From you re symptoms so far I think you may be heading for pump problems, .

has the problem been there since you changed the steering box? If so have you bled the system correctly. Mine had a leak once refilled it and steering was continually heavy, bled system several times over a week and problem cleared
