found a very interesting ford near my college last night, and me and a mate decided to go through in our defenders. the water was coming up to the lights, maybe higher. is this alright without a snorkel or breather kit?

NO!
basically as long as the water is below your air filter you *SHOULD* be ok.
as for breathers well they come off axles and by the sounds of it they were undrewater :doh:

Would not recommend any deeper than the top of your wheel rims. Although you will may still need to fit wading plugs (varient depending).
Land Rover rate a 1999 - 2002 Td5 Defender at a max wading depth of 500mm (20").

With a RDi you need to raise the air intake as soon as any water is being splashed about in the engine bay, not just submerged but splashing about, so as said when it's by the top of the wheels it will be on the sump and the chassis rails.

yeah fit a snorkle etc. but dont worry about damage you may have done. ive had water over the bonnet on a few occasions with no snorkle. its a very hairy experience!

Whilst I don't recommend it, you can sometimes manage without a snorkel.

Series 3, 2.25 petrol, no snorkel & very wet feet. :lol:

I hydro locked my engine a couple of months ago, cracked the block and bent the rods and vales. Cost over £300 to fix
The water didn't even come to the bonnet, so YES I advise a snorkel, you'll never know til is broke.

i think i may go for a snorkel then.
is it difficult to build a snorkel?
