Title: axle breathers
Post by: Dr.Ed on May 01, 2008, 19:20:01
Finally got a snorkel for the disco, now need to think about extending the axle and gearbox breathers. The question is:  is there any reason why i can't just run an extension from the breather pipes in the engine bay up to the top of the snorkel instead of replacing them completely?

Thanks,

Don't forget that you have 5 breathers if your a manual box..., two axles, gear and trans boxes and the fuel tank.

There's also one on the diesel fuel pump, but I never bothered with this one myself.

I thought of running the breathers up the snorkel but decided on a junction block under the bonnet so I only had to run one pipe up the snorkel.

if you do raise them make sure you loop ends to prevent any thing running down them

there is a guy on fleebay selling a kit that is for extending your existing, and a lot cheaper than the normal kits.

i need to do mine, i am sure i could get the fitting from screwfix or somewhere if only new what i needed rather than buy a ready made up kit :? (waits in anticipation for a nice helpful reply  )

havent got a catalogue with me, but you just need the diameter of the pipe and then all you need is an "adapter" to fit in it and some more hose.

Take a hose off and go see the unhelpfull children at b&q

thanks for the answers, think i'll save myself half the task and just run the extensions - feel a trip to my local hydraulic hose place coming on!

Hi, I make and sell these ( on eBay as well).
Dont use silicone, its too soft and will collapse with vacuum and kinks when bent.
Use 6mm nylon tube.
If you just want fittings, I can do them at a sensible price, if you want extensions with a looped end,
Email me for cost, it will be competitive and and easier than DIY,
Dave

 Got my kit from wizardbiltz.

4 pipes 4 banjos and all copper washers total cost was £25 off ebay and no joints in the pipes.

Paid £15 for a junction block so only had to run one pipe up the snorkel.

Hi
Our manifold has evolved a bit since the early days.
This is what it looks like now

Breather manifold (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BREATHER-WADING-KIT-MANIFOLD-LAND-ROVER-4x4-SNORKLE_W0QQitemZ170172722046QQihZ007QQcategoryZ31348QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem)

And other breather bits breathers (http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Wizardbilt_Wading-and-breather-kits_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ2738540QQftidZ2QQtZkm)

Nylon tube is the way to go.Its hard so it wont get squashed ,its resistant to oils and fuel and i comes in nice colours !!
