Post by: Jake on February 12, 2005, 14:12:38
Can anyone help.
We hit hard out of a water covered hole a couple of weeks back and ever since the steerings not been right on my disco.
It steers fine to the right but only half to the left (usaul land rover steering is bad, this is ridiculous!!)
I cant see anything obvious underneth, it all looks straight but somethings clearly wrong
any thoughts or suggestions, please reply!!!

Could the steering damper be damaged and it's jamming internally and stopping travel on the steering?
Undo one and of it and see if the travel comes bacl.

Or a damaged swivel?

You're going to have to take things off, one at a time to isolate the damage, start with the steering damper, then try one of the balljoints, check that the steering box is still ok then check eack of the swivels.  Don't assume it's the LH wheel even though it's most likely.

I will be changing a few things around in the next couple of weeks (i'm gonna buy a decarbon steering damper and repossision it  under the steering guard, dan bars or whatever their called and polybushes)
Hope fully i'll find out what's going on.
The steering damper has taken some knocks hence why i'm moving it! (changed it twice in 1 year)
Fingers crossed for that being the problem.
Any chance it could be the steering colum?
What is a swivel? (i'm still learning)

Swivel=swivel hub, the big chrome plated ball at the end of the axle that allows your steering  It carries the king-pin.  On yours it contains a CV joint so I doubt the problem is inside, I think you've shaken something loose or f***d another damper.

I don't think it's a problem with the steering colum unless you have lost a lot of travel, if it goes all the way round then no, it won't be that.

A really hard (I mean HARD) knock can damage the steering box internally and this happend to ours (before we got it).

But my favourite is that damper, get it moved into the steering guard, either make a braket to clamp to the drag link or fit a Defender drag link.  I'm thinking about binning the Defender set up because it comes in at an angle and the DeCarbon is pressurised so it rotates the drag link over and the drop arm balljoint boot lasts about a fortnight.  Try to get a non-pressurised damper if you can, you reeeealy don't need a gas damper here (if you really want one, buy a HD oil one and I'll swap you!)

Get yourself a QT front diff guard (Tomorrow if you're going) because this will catch the track rod if it gets caught and so prevent it bending too badly.  I have heard that someone makes cranked track rods but I don't know who, I think it's abroad anyway.

One advantage of a 2" lift is that the drag link moves upwards out of harms way (unless you fit castor correction).

On my Disco while turning the steering wheel will turn easy then become hard and then turn easy again

Had a look I have oil leaking from the box but thats been leaking for over a year. Got a new one at home just not the know how to fit it. The bleeding part worries me.

The steering rod that goes from the steering wheel to the box has some play in it.

What would you do change or check?

Steering shaft UJ, £10 from Paddocks.  If it's the top one you need a new steering shaft.  Start with WD40 and see if it gets any easier.  Sounds like that's the one that has play, so it needs changing for the MOT.

Fitting a new box is a B******D, they're b****y heavy so you need a strong friend.  Fit it in the dead-ahead position and fill with PAS fluid, run the engine and bleed from the nipple.  Then turn lock to lock several times and bleed again.

Check if after a few days also.

Have sprayed wd40 a few times and it does get easyer for a while then plays me up again. It seems loose where it connects to the PAS box.  ](*,)

No worries about the weight my other nickname is Shrek!!

Will try and get some help though

Thanks.
