there was a thread on the forum somewhere about making rock sliders....cant find it!
can anyone help me? if not im starting a new one! :D
-
Having seen your efforts so far, you could build your own easily and put us all to shame.
:P
-
well this is what i have so far! hahaha

just the basis, plans to weld straight to the chassis and bolt through the sills going to be bloody strong......well stronger then the bearmach ones i had
anyone have any pics of there sliders to put up? i need inspiration.

I think technically they should have a gentle curve to them, it all comes down to how much time and energy you want to put into them I'd say. Straight ones will work just as well, obviously you'll end up with a gap at the ends but it shouldn't make much difference.
-
Hmmmm..... i will be keeping a beady eye on this thread now then :D
-
the fact that it curves isn't really an issue. the bearmach ones i had were not curved but they did have a large bit of spongy rubber stuff to make up for that i assume. i could curve them with the English wheel but i really cant be botherd, if its that much of a big deal i will just jump on them!
the only things i have to go bye are my dads disco parts ones(which are curved) if they are half that good i will be happy, i am sticking to box section when it comes to tree sliders and i will be welding straight to the chassis AND bolting to the sills. got a rough idea on whats going on just need to make them.
***watch this space***
-
take loads of pics as i wnt 2 make my own or u could make them for me boss :D
-
A cunning idea for making the curves (if anyone can see a flaw here, say so!):
Bolt one end on, then slowly jack it up, working along the slider and bolting/welding it as you go. The weight of the vehicle should enable you to put a gentle curve into the slider.

the amount of things i have made for my truck that people want is incredible! i should start a business! :afro:
landymadjay; i would be happy to make some for you if all goes well with my ones. however you will be aware that they may not be as strong as others and you will have to pay for materials/sundries. the chances are that they will be just as strong but i don't know, we will be the prototype testers ! hahaha
i would not be comfortable bending like that! there would be alot of stress on the sill and weld points. better i think to have a gap and allow the sliders to move slightly, that way if anything were to get damaged it would be the slider first.
just a thought
-
but can u get the materials if i pay
-
i am making 1 slider tomorrow and ordering some steel, ill put a pic up and if you like them i will make you some, OK?
just out of curiosity, would people buy these sliders?? i know there isn't much of a picture but if they were made out of box and as strong as any other slider would you buy them?
i ask because Ive run out of budget for the truck
-
but wot price
-
no idea. not much say, £120 maby? havnt weighed up the costs yet but would people go for that?
im thinking gearbox guards/belly pans too! it worries me that the gearbox is fully exposed! we say £50-£60 for that made of 8mm alli will holes machined into them?
haha spot gaps in the market i do!
-
i would be very interested
-
how vary extradanary!
putting all sorts of ideas in my head! i will ponder this in more depth tomorow. as i say i am running low on money so there is a very high possibility that this may be happening. give me feedback people.

cant wait to see wat u come up with boss , rollcage mount maybe included ........ or built in chassais slider aswell  :D

that is a bloody good idea buddy, I'm going over soon so i will look at the possibilities

Make your own, get some 4x2 and get them lashed on, make some brackets and the likes easy done! and far far cheaper.

I made my own by replacing the sills with 100x50mm 3mm wall box section then welded some bent scaffold pole on as a tree slider
-
i made these and fitted them where the orignal steps were
-
got one done today, not sure if i like the way it sits, it needs some trimming on the inside but apart form that i don't think it looks too bad!
i didn't weld 2 pieced of 2"x2" together like i planned i welded 2 1x1 on to a 2x2 the thinking behind it; the more walls in it the stronger it is. also thought i would get away with out bolting to the sills oh how wrong i was! i think i may ditch the idea of welding to the chassis and make a c type thing to wrap around the sills and bolt it.....
anyway, more pics on Tuesday.

liking them already , how about a mantec step / standard hi lift mouting point built in
-
i did toy with the idea of putting a hi-lift point in there but i don't want to make more work than i need. there is a "family fun day" at birchem newton (courtesy of brekland landrover club) sometime next month, that is my absolute deadline! i need both sliders made, the wings pinned back and the prop on at the very least!
maby further down the line i take a drill or plasma cuter to them

yh boss know where ur coming from playing with it is some much fun compared to make and make more stuff which in time u mite not even need anyway.think u think thing through a hell of alot
