Post by: flash42 on May 18, 2008, 18:49:26
was having a look around the back of my 90, and was wondering if anyone knows any tell tales signs.
and also is it possible to turn a normal 90 into a truck cab, prob wont actually do it, but was curious if its possible.

if it was a truck cab there may still be the lashing rings along the body side. also evidence on the rear Xmember of the tailgate hinges.

may also be on the top of the lower half of the rear door aperature the little brackets that held on the tailgate wires.

By deciphering the VIN plate (up to a point anyway)

For example

SALLDVBV7FA 1234567 is a 90 CSW, that is a RHD, 5-speed, (3.5) V8 built in 1989

Breaking it down

SA = Rover Group
L = Land Rover
LD =
Stage 2*
V =
Wheelbase
(H = 110", K = 127", R = 110", S= 110" Military, V =92.9")
A=
Body Type (A= Truck-Cab, Soft-Top, Pick-Up. B = SWB Station Wagon, E = 2-door Crew-Cab(?!), F = 4 door Crew-Cab, H = HCPU, M = LWB Station Wagon)
V = Engine
(B= diesel-Turbo, C= 2.5 N/A diesel, D = 2.5 petrol, F =Tdi, G = 2.3 diesel, H = 2.3 ptreol, M = 3.9EFi petrol, V = 3.5(carb) Petrol, Y = T16 petrol, Z= 3.9 Isuzu diesel ('Oz' only)
7 =Steering & Gearbox
(1= RHD, 4-speed manual, 2 = LHD 4-speed manual, 7 = RHD 5-speed manual, 8 = LHD 5-speed manual)
F= Model Year
( A = 1983/84, B = 1985/87, E= 1988, F= 1989, G = 1990, H = 1991, J = 1992, K = 1993, L = 1994, M = 1995, N = 1966)
FA =Assembly Location

(A= Solihull, FA= overseas)

Hope this helps, sorry it's not too clear on the distinctions between the 'commercial varients)

*Coil-Sprung 'utility'

I'm sure that early 90 Station Wagons (up to perhaps the Diesel-Turbo?) had the rope lugs in-situ anyway :-k
'Ditto' the cross-member tailgate hinge mounts

Although, I stand to be corrected

An internal mount was an early option, I think

I'd expect Station Wagons to not have it, but hard tops to still have it.

I went through the same exercise with my early 110 (1983). The VIN on that didn't break down as far as BTM's list. The body type only showed as 'commercial' which included truck cab, soft top or hard top. It had lashing hooks along the side and tailgate hinges on the cross member, but was a hard top when I bought it.
